She lifted her drink to his and shook her head laughing, "Well arent you just a glass half full kinda guy." She smiled, "but I do feel pretty fortunate right about now." She took a sip from her drink and glanced out over the water, it was a pretty spectacular view. "So Sgt Fowler, do you have anything you have to take part in this holiday, I mean, its is kinda for you guys after all." She smiled, actually she hadnt been able to stop smiling.

Nick shook his head. "Nope, I am all yours this weekend. The only thing I have to do is stay kind of active."

He smiled at her and said, "and sleep. I have to be in bed by 10:30 each night. So I hope to spend as many of those hours as possible with a beautiful lady from Arizona"

She smiled, "I think I like the sound of that." She sipped her drink and looked over at him, "I have to admit this place is pretty remarkable."

They placed their food order and after the wsitress walked away, "So..... tell me about yourself..."

Nick looked around a moment and said, "Not sure what there is to tell, I joined the army after high school and have been ever since. They paid for a degree while I was in but leaving is hard. The one thing I do know how to do well is be a soldier."

He looked at her and asked, "How did you end up dancing for an NBA team? Does it pay weel, or is all the money in side jobs like photo shoots?"

She laughed, "I moved to Arizona for college and was one of the leads on the dance team... and then my senior year there one of the choreographers for the Suns started recruiting me.. and they made me a great offer... they pay pretty good. The other side stuff makes it all worth it.." she laughed, "am I rambling?- I kinda feel like I am."

Nick shook his head, "No, not at all. You sound happy and that is wonderful." Nick looked out over the river a moment and thought about how to ask about a guy back home..

"Thank you boyfriend for me when you get home. It is great that you could fly out."

She laughed, "now That would have been an interesting conversation... had I needed to have it." She smiled, "the only man Ive got back home is my lab Leo who is enjoying his mini vacation at my girl Averys house." The butterflies started fluttering again knowing he had asked the relationship question.

"Did your family and friends all fly here to see you when you got back? Im sure they were happy to have you back."

"My folks did, yes," Nick said. "I don't associate with anyone else from my childhood really. To say that I was a good kid would be a fib of the tallest order."

Nick saw the dubious look and said, "I got into a lot of trouble. My folks drank a lot and from the age of eight or so I took care of them as much as they did me." Nick recalled the odors of stale beer and staler sweat. "As a result I stayed away most of the time as a teenager and fought my way around the Southside of Chicago."

She smiled and nodded her head, "everyone has a past... some just have a rougher one than others... but it looks like yojve turned that all around." She smiled at him. "I didnt really get to get into trouble as a kid... not with all my brothers and my dad. The boys were pretty much terrified." She laughed at the memories.

Nick made a show off looking high then low, under the table, the people around them and in the river. "Whew, no siblings. " He quipped with a smile

She laughed and rolled her eyes, "laugh now.."

Their dinner came and they chatted as they ate and when they finished she pushed her plate to the side. Once the bill was pajd they stood up and headed out onto the sidewalk that ran along with waterfront.

"So have you thought any more about what you want to do... once your healed? I mean, if you chose to be a weather man I may have to tune in just to see you.." she winked at him playfully.

Nick laughed, "Combat weather. "

He maneuvered himself to be on her right giving himself and his cane room to navigate the romantically lit river walk. "I don't see being a weather man. I don't see being out of the Army truthfully. It is all I know how to be."

He grinned and said, "at this point all I know how to do is fight and that I am very good at that. Not sure how well that translates into a civilian job other than joining dome mercenary company, or private security."

As he talked Nick moved a little closer to Kali until their hands brushed against each other. Taking advantage of the opportunity he held onto it gently.

She laughed and nodded her head, "that makes sense.. I mean youve been at it a long time..." they walked in silence for a minute, "it cant have been easy on your significant other tho... I mean, not having you there.."

As they walked she felt their hands brush eachother, then realized hers was in his, she didnt pull away... she actually enjoyed holding handswith him.

Nick almost laughed and it came out more like a chortle instead. "Yeah on the significant other front, I would say that you are as significant add any of the people back in the past and more significant than most. "

He grinned at Kali and said, "so nothing to worry about back there. My job is the obstacle. "

Nick scrunched up his face a moment and apologized, "I should have thought about how that sounded first. Sorry. "

It made her laugh, his reaction. "Its ok... I knew how you had intended it to sound." They walked along the edge of the water, from any strangers perspective they looked like any other regular couple... holding hands on a walk.

She knew it had to be getting close to time to get him back, not that she wanted their night to end, but she knew they shouldnt push it.

It was the 400 pound gorilla that he didn't want to acknowledge. Without saying it they slowly turned around and headed back. Nick ' s legs were beginning to ache and the pain in his arm was flaring up.

As he summoned a cab Nick looked at her whispered, "Thanks for everything. The letters, emails, coming out here everything. "

"The physical therapy is more manageable knowing I get to send to or read an email from you.

She smiled at him after they climbed into the cab. " hey Im just happy you wrote back. I honestly didnt see getting anything back... so thank You." She lookedover at him, "I hada really good time with you."

Nick settled into the cab next to Kali and breathed in her perfume again. Part of his mind wondered if he would ever smell it again once she went back to Arizona. He immediately cast the thought aside, it was hard enough knowing she had a life to go back to and soon. He resolved to make the weekend as magical as he could.

"Hell Kali, had you included a photo, I would have shot myself in the foot to get back here to you."

They rode side by side eventually arriving at the billets on base where Nick walked Kali back to her room. The stood at her door and he wrapped his good arm around Kali ' s waist and pulled her close, hugging her tight, firmly, conveying his strength, physically, mentally and emotionally. As her arms wrapped around him, Nick felt his breath escape him, and all emotions fled except one.

Contentment.

As the hug wound down and they parted slightly, Nick whispered hoarsely, "I am going to kiss you now," and he leaned forward.

She laughed at his comment about shooting himself in the foot to get back home.

She was glad when his arm wrapped aroynd her and she hugged him back... fitting just right in his arms. She wasnt fully prepared when he said he was going to kiss her, and it took her kind a minute to catch up. She smiled and leaned in to meet him half way. Their lips touching ever so softly. It was the perfect first kiss.

She smiled as she stepped back, "Now hows a girl supposed to sleep after that?" She smiled, "you better get outta here before you get me in trouble for making you late."

As their lips touched Nick felt a fire begin to burn a their lips first touched. That touch changed along the way into an oral caress, which stored the fire into a blazing inferno which Nick would have surrendered himself to without thinking twice. As it was the burning log the kids ignited raged in his slacks threatening to burst through the thin material.

He nodded at Kali as she stepped back, "By dreaming of the guy that gave it?" He quipped.

He looked at her and asked, "What time do you get up? I don't want to be here to early. "

She laughed playfully, "I planned on dreaming of that guy before we kissed."

She smiled when he asked her what time she woke up, "I am sure I will be awake.. so just get back here as soon as you can." She reached behind her and opened her door, "now you need to walk away or I cant be held responsible for my actions." She smiled at him.

Nicks eyes were ravenous as her looked back at her. He locked his lips a second then replied, "If you want to lose yourself in me, if you want to be irresponsible with me, I accept it. I relish it. I want it, need it."

He smiled warmly, winked at Kali and hobbled down the hall.

She stood olin the doorway shaking her head laughing as shevwatched him head down the hall. She closed the door behind her in her room and sat on the edge of the bed, slipping her shoes off. She could still taste him on her lips.... and dang it tasted good. She laughed at herself for lettibg herself get all worked up... it was just a jiss after all.

Moving to her suitcase, she pulked out a tshirt and changed from the dress into it. She climbed into the bed and pulled out her phone and quickly typed an email,

"I had a wonderful time tonight... thank you for everything! Hooe you get some rest so we can spend the day together tomorrow!"

She hit send then laid back, trying to convince hersslf to go to sleep.

Nick read Kali ' s email while waiting for the shuttle to take him back to the hospital. While the physical manifestation of his excitement about the day had gone down he was still on cloud 9.

Kali,

Thank you so much for coming to San Antonio to see me. This had been a fantastic weekend already.

Nick tossed and turned throughout the night. His dreams far more erotic than he ever would have guessed he would have been. The focus of his dreams each time was Kali.

He woke the next morning to a stained sheet much to his surprise. "Nurse is going to love that," he muttered.

Kali was finally able to sleep, her dreams definatly focused on the solider... she woke early the next morning. After showering she put on a pair of fitted jeans and a tshirt. She was finishing drying her hair when she heard the knock on the door, her heart began to race and she laughed at herself.

"Good morning!" She said, smiling when she opened the door. "Thought you'd never get here" she stepped to the side as she let him in, kissing his cheak in a friendly greeting. She sat at the end of the bed to slip her shoes on and glanced over at him, "how are you feeling today?"
