These things stick with a man, F5.
One of my most cherished acquaintances was on Matagorda with some other Greeners doing ecological naturalisty things as a part of a college course. He trapped and counted small mammals.
This Godforsaken island has no fresh water, only brackish marshy spots. Near-feral cattle have free range of the place. They live on salty marshgrasses and whatnot and drink the brackish water. They're tough as nails, but they fatten amazingly fast in a feedlot.
No fresh water meant that the boat to town (Brownsville?) used to bring in heaps of beer and spirits, you know, for hydration.
He liked tequila at the time, but miscalculated. Woke up roasting in the noonday sun on the airstrip tarmac, dry and aching and hurting all over and very very miserable, with these cows in a semicircle looking down at him (as was the hot Texas sun).
Nasty sunburn, rotten hangover, and Matagorda cows. He can't abide the smell of tequila, even today, fifteen years later.
