Yesterday when I showed up for work I was informed we had 36 patients and only one Aide, me. I shrugged while cursing under my breath and started getting ready for a hell shift. My boss then informed me that I wasn't to worry, I was going to have help and that I should split the assignments fifty-fifty. I shrugged and did as she wanted. There were now two assignments of 18 patients each.
I had everything ready for my assignment and was hitting the floor when I saw the boss hitting the floor. She was my help. I groaned to myself as she grinned at me and informed me she would show me exactly what she had been talking about. (She keeps telling me about how it was when she was an Aide, 30+ years ago.) I went to work and busted my ass, I had a feeling I knew what was coming.
By noon my assignment was taken care of and my patients were happy. The boss was at the Nurses Station and smiling at me while telling me how she had finished long before me. Then the complaints started to come in. Patients were complaining about not having been cared for in the manner they were used to. Every one of them was one of the bosses patients.
Once more I got to work. Like I said I had been expecting this. 18 more patients to care for, some of whom were quite upset at their treatment. I was busier than a three legged cat at a dog show but I got things done and feathers calmed down. I had to explain to more than one patient and family member that the one caring for them in the morning was the boss who hadn't worked the floor in too many years. She expected them to be happy with the care they used to give people when M.D.'s were Gods and just going to the city was an adventure. Finally I was done.
When I returned to the Nurses Station the boss was sitting there smiling. She wanted to know what the people had been complaining about and I explained it to her in no uncertain terms. I told her that what she had learned way back when just didn't cut it anymore. Blowing into a room and telling a patient that they needed to get up and bathe didn't work. One had to make sure the patient bathed. Approaching a bed ridden patient and giving them the sniff test didn't mean they had been bathed. You actually had to bathe them. (There is a reason I had Baby Powder banned from the unit.)
My boss didn't understand it even though I tried to explain it to her. Finally I got fed up and asked her how long I would last on the unit if I didn't bathe my patients or do the other duties I was assigned. She told me she would fire me out of hand. I agreed with this and asked her why she thought she could get away with it. She just looked at me without saying a word. I shook my head and went back to work after telling her she didn't need to help me unless she wanted me to train her.
When I was getting ready to head home the Charge Nurse handed me an envelope. It had my name on the front but nothing else. I was curious about this and opened it to find a note from my boss. The note stated that she was happy that I was on the unit and was willing to work so hard. She stated that she would be sending me an E-Mail with a long list of questions about the duties of Aides on the floor and that she would be changing my status on the unit. (According to the note I am now in charge of training any new Aides that come on the unit, I will be in the loop about such things as hiring and firing Aides as well as scheduling.) Let's see how long this lasts.
