Saw it yesterday. Before I tell you my reaction to it, I have to say, I never read the book, never caught the hype and didn't know a thing or what to expect.

The trailer was hilariously funny (you know the one talking about trailers) and some friends invited me to see it.

I have seen a lot of senseless and stupid stuff but this was a new level. That's also the reason I didn't really like it. I am usually for stupid senseless humour but this was a very strange humour. Very strange flick indeed.

There were a few things that made me laugh so hard I almost broke down though.
Those few things prevented the movie from being a total waste of time. Such as:
- The beginning with the dolphins, the great voice over and the great song. (Have to download that somewhere)
- The 'independe-Day spoof scene' where the camera 'zooms' out in tact with the music and this goes on forever and forever until we see the earth being destroyed. Hilarious.
- The scene where they turned into these wool-figures. Superb style.
- The acting of Sam Rockwell. A truly insane person, very funny remarks.
- The charatcer of Marvin. Hell, he needs his own film. A depressed robot, what more could you ask for.

Other than that the movie was rather stupid and pointless. I know it is supposed to be so, but still I don't like it.

One of my friends knew the books and said that they left out all of the funny parts which is due to the fact that the book is very cleverly using language. So it's understandable. Also because a movie always has to leave out certain things of the book,

So I guess it's really a movie for the hardcore fans who can overlook certain changes.

Comments?

P.S.: Oh the part during the end credits was funny though.

I'm right now reading the book. I'll wait til they finish the trilogy of the movies.

It hasn't reached my corner of the world yet. Love the books, so have high hopes for the movie.

Movie? Meh. It wasted an hour and a half.

Marvin was rubbish..his voice didn't connect with the robot,it was just Alan Rickmans voice. the round robot Marvin thing looked really crap. Didn't even convince me it was a robot to be honest *L*

Arthur was casted well, Ford Prefect was ok, but his role was almost unneccesary, he did nowt! Zaphod just didn't do it for me either, he didn't seem right.

The voice over was spot on? Who else but Stephen Fry could have done it? the Animated bits were good too.

Mostly I was disappointed, bored and very unimpressed.

And I've read all the books, but I'mnot an avid fan :)

I read the first of the books 23 years ago. I sat down next to the Murray River, on my own, with nowt but a 6 pack of the finest ale and a deck chair, and read it cover to cover. I laughed so much it nearly made me sick.

The film was massively disappointing. Can't put my finger on why - perhaps the style of humour has aged badly. Even the "classic" jokes - the meaning of life being "42", the babelfish (and how it disproves God's existence - omitted from the film), Marvin's "Here I am, brain the size of a planet..." depression didn't grab me.

The only bit I liked was Zartiblartfast (is that how it is spelt?). His character was sublime.

Oh and "So long, and thanks for all the fish" was kind of cute!

I have never read the books either ... they're too strange even for my taste (and for those who know me well thats telling) ...

But that movie was frikkin hilarious. Right up there in terms of strange humor with "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". Boy did we laugh hard ....

Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin was a genius cast, same with Sam Rockwell. The scenes in the planetary workshop could teach George Lucas a trick or two about SFX.

The changes of the ship right before it fired up the infinite improbability drive where just great.

But the funniest scene was definitly that whale falling from the sky ... "Hello Ground ... plonk!" :D

I think I might read the books now ... maybe they aren't as strange as they seemed before.
