So... I have sixteen Confederate Veterans in my ancestry (SALUTE). There IS a sensible solution to Confederate Memorials and that is to move them when at all possible to the nearest National Civil War battlefield.
I am sure If I were Black I would look with jaundiced eye upon Confederate memorials. Being white I pay them zero attention except when visiting a battlefield. I have a medium size Civil War library. Those books are about the soldiers... not slaves or dreaming of having a slave. Heroic, courageous stories on both sides. Men (and a few women) who had the balls to stand a hundred yards apart or less and fire lead at each other.
North Carolina was the last State to enter the War. THEY did so because the North blockaded the Ports and stopped commerce. Once it started men joined for many reasons. Adventure/peer pressure, they thought it would be short... many towns sent Companies of men and in some towns none came back. One out of every four Confederate soldiers killed was from NC.

I could go on...

As far as the Slaves are concerned. Yes, they were shit on but the silver lining was they were freed in America. Are blacks better off anywhere else. If that is raciest to anyone then tough shit. They were going to be freed even if there was no war because of the invention of the Cotton Gin. Slave owners did not have to feed and house a cotton gin.

I hate the KKK, those fuckers took the Confederate battle flag and made a mockery of it. That flag was for the troops to rally on and when you are in battle you are not thinking of an ideology but of your buddy.

The South needed more fertile soil in new slave states, since cash crop plantations destroyed soil fertility. In 1861 they knew they would not be expanding the southern empire. I've heard that numerous times and it is a total revisionist history fabrication. The cotton gin separated the cotton from the seeds, but it couldn't tend it in the fields, it couldn't harvest it, it couldn't bale it or transport it. Manpower was needed for those tasks and the southern plantation owners had a cheap supply in slave labor. If anything the cotton gin meant that production of cotton would expand, requiring even more labor, more slaves, to tend more fields. They had a very cheap, compliant labor force to do that work. There is no way in hell they were ever going to free the slaves.

As far as the soldiers, most never owned slaves but fought the war because the ones who did, who stood to lose the most if the slaves were freed, convinced the common man that the north was the aggressor and was trying to infringe on the south's freedom. All that was done by using arguments that appealed to their emotions, rather than using any type of logic. Humans are emotional animals and easy to manipulate that way.
