An exciting Memorial day classic played out in Indianapolis, Indiana as race car driver Danica Patrick became the first woman to ever lead the race.

She lead again at the end of the race managing a critical fuel problem by leaning down the fuel mixture to conserve fuel.

With just a few laps remaining she was passed by Englishman Dan Wheldon, who went on to win the race, Danica finsihed in 4th place.

An American classic event won by a Brit for the first time in 40 years and the first ever lap led by a woman. Will wonders never cease?

Hot damn. A great race and an exciting finish. Great for her that she finished fourth. A couple of minor errors on her part but nothing any other rookie, and in fact nothing a few of the more experienced racers didn't do. (And I don't follow open wheel racing.) here's hoping she keeps racing, I think she's going to be making a name for herself as a driver.

Ms. Patrick did a fantastic job of drving, and could have won that race.

I gained a lot of respect for her during the post race interview, when she brushed aside all the female related questions. She stuck to what matters, the race.
She is a fierce competitor, and her diplomacy during the interview is to be applauded. She was PO'd about the call her crew chief made, forcing her to preserve gas. The horsepower sacrificed because of that call cost her the race.

Every couple of years, they trot out some token female to generate more interest in an over-hyped event. Typically, they drop to obscurity after a short run.
Ms. Patrick could well be the real deal. She is a racer.

From the neanderthal department:

Some knot head from Nascar said he wouldn't race against her because her weight (about 100 lbs.) gave her an unfair advantage over the guys.

(Y'all can't make this stuff up.)

And for all these years I always thought the outcome was because of the car, the driver and the pit crew. Plus a certain amount of luck (accidents, part failures, etc)

Fuck the race, just have a drivers' weigh-in.

That was Robby Gordon, perpetual knot head.

He's an idiot, most race fans can't wait for him to run out of money and go away.

Ms. Patrick has lots more balls than Robby ever will.

I think we may be safe, I just learned on a Science Channel special, A Species Odyssey, Part two, the Neanderthals and Homosapiens could not interbreed.

Interesting...however I did hear on a later program that she did in fact run out of gas on the last lap...
