-I was thinking what might be awesome is historical erotica.

-A combination between history and fiction. A research story about a historical character, research to see if they had a mistress and with reason and facts write a story.

-With citations at the bottom.

Done that:

Godiva

And fictional historical characters: Brobdingnag and Gulliver in Lilliput

Reminds me of Gore Vidal taking on Caligula with Bob Guccione ramping up the sex. Vidal tried to stay more scholarly and authentic.

Catherine the Great's mythos really lends itself to this idea. I don't know if I would rather citations or an extensive author's note at the end.

Definitely a neat idea.

I like the historical stuff too, even just the general "set in a certain time period" pieces. There just isn't enough of it around, in my opinion.

I've always been interesting in Maria Theresa. She managed to break a bed during her honeymoon, so good for her. It's a shame she had to live in an era full of overshadowing monarchs.

I couldn't write such a story, but I would be interested in reading someone's attempt at a piece about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings; Louis XV and Madame du Pomadour; Rasputin and Alexandra; Mick Jagger and Margaret Trudeau, to name a few.

George Mac Donald Frasier's Flashman Series has got lots of sex in it, although not especially graphic enough to be erotica.

Mary Renault made a name with her historica, which often had erotic interludes, and she provides reasoning for her stories...

It might be interesting to use a historical to show how attitudes to sexuality changes with the times and places.

"Shogun" was an example that showed, to a limited extent differences in culture and sexual attitudes.

I tried this in 'Spreading Seeds" which is a future history, set in 2352 where the attitudes are very different than they are in 2013. Of course, I used a lot of twisted history to produce a world with 10 women for every man so maybe that's different?

Interesting. Sort of an Anti-Alaska.

...

"Shogun" was based on the real life Will Adams, Pilot Major from Gillingham in Kent. He wrote his own story in letters back to England and there are other accounts of his life, mainly from Dutch traders to Japan who found him to be a very useful contact.

The English traders were less friendly, seeing him as a competitor and someone who had 'gone native'.

James Clavell's novel used much of Will Adams' experiences so was almost a fictionalised biography.

Historical fiction is always good. I'm a big fan of the Outlander series. Didn't know anything about Culloden before the series. One of the best series I've ever read. It had time travel, witches, sex, romance, kilts, lots of historical events from Culloden to WWII in Europe, Bahamas and US.

There is a chain story here where a 'spirit of a ring" gets tossed back a forth across history. Really good. It had a Pirate!:)among other eras.

I spent a lot of time researching Mesopotamia and is a Fertile Crescent, with Gods, Goddesses, Heros and Slave-girls! :):)

The Classical Greek period is probably too well documented to not get called for your inaccuracies. But Kronos, ah ha, is almost wide open, "Dances With Bulls!::) sounds good to me.

"Do it like an Egyptian," which millinia?

there are a set of books by chesea quinn yarbouro, the st germain vampire series that runs from Greek and rome to current era that have some nice scenery

As much as I like historical stories, it just isn't the same without flush toilets and hot running water.

Actually, the first ever contact between Japanese and Westerners resulted in interracial marriage. There might be a story there... Of course, the daughter was given for the secret of making guns, so it wasn't Disney or anything, but it could work.

Actually that is a very good idea. I've been doing a little bit of research lately for just such a story. Stay tuned.

I wrote a story once about the Salem Witch Trials. It is a period of history that fascinates me. :cattail: I did a bunch of research, but I didn't include any historical characters. Just characters based on historical characters, but with different names. It was never intended as anything more than a realistically historical setting for a fictional story. If that makes sense! :rose::rose::rose: Morgana

That's probably the best way to go about it, honestly. Don't need to worry so much about specific inaccuracies, but the details will give added life to the story.
