Hiring someone to clean my house

My housekeeper left a year ago. She used to spend two days a week. It was lovely not having to clean. But I was working very long hours so it was not like it really gave me extra 'free' hours in the day.

This year I have been doing it myself because I have stopped being a workaholic and smelling the roses more...

If you can afford it then go for it. Just make sure it is someone you can trust around the house and they don't tell everyone else your business. :)

I've done it and it's GREAT! It leaves me more time to be with the people I love doing the things we enjoy doing together! It's worth every penny! My lady does the dusting, the bathrooms, sweeps and mops, vaccums, and cleans my kitchen.

Every other Thursday, she cleans the floors and the bathrooms and straighens up, It takes about three hours and costs $120.

(we have 3 half baths, and 4 full bathrooms)

A housekeeper wouldn't do me any good..

I don't want anyone seeing how dirty my house can get.. so I'd spend hours cleaning before the housekeeper got here.

If so, what do they do?
get them to do the things you dislike doing...

cleaning the bathroom
vacum cleaning
dusting
washing windows
etc

I broke down and called my cleaning lady, she came today. I spent the day straightening up while she cleaned behind me. This house is too big for me to keep after constantly while I work full time and have 3 messy kids. Blah!

I'm in clean house heaven right now...ahhh

I'm paid to clean the house I live in.

And I don't get $120 for 3 hours of work..

I need a new job.

You and me both!

My cleaning lady only charges me $50....

I'm a little afraid I'd have the same problem.

$120, though? It doesn't really cost that much, does it? My house is certainly not that big, what kind of hourly rate are we talking?

No, it doesn't usually cost that much, you could get someone for half that. She is an Albanian refugee, with two young children, we are just helping her and her husband support their family.

Depends on where you live. Merry maids charges more here in nyc. It's not an hourly rate thing though. Depends on what you want them to do and such.

My roomie and I have them sweep and wash the floors, clean the blinds, teh baseboards, the bathroom and kitchen in detail and I forget what else.

One every two weeks for like 100.

I think it makes you smart.

I also pay $50 for every other week cleaning. I pick up the house and straighten it before she cleans. She shouldn't have to move piles of paper to dust, for example. Any dirty clothes that missed the hamper are picked up, etc.

It is worth it to me NOT to have to do the basic cleaning. I work all week long and don't want to spend Saturdays cleaning. Besides, I HATE housework.

Finally, something Cheyenne and I are in total agreement over.

Perhaps the start of a rapprochement?

We agreed on pregnant teens and the value of an education, too.

I have worked as a housecleaner, and I have to say that it is amazingly common that your average everyday families use the service of maids. Having a messy house is nothing to be embarrassed about. I totally understand why.

I am very busy, sick and trying to manage too much in my life, and I've consdered doing it too now. I have so many pets, and the pet hair has me vaccuming every day. For me, that is managable, but leaves me very little free time if I am to have to do my bathrooms, dusting and kitchen floors and woodwork. I really want to hire someone.

I think I may do it twice a month or something, because I can seem to keep things picked up and livable otherwise. I just don't like to have to dust every week. It really sucks.

This is something that would come in really handy around the holidays, when things are insane and so busy. I'd rather spend my free time enjoying my family and friends.

Ugh. Me too. Does she do stuff like wash dishes and clean toilets?

Scrubs the bathrooms clean, and the kitchen. I have a dishwasher so part of my "picking up" is that I make sure the kitchen counters are empty- no dirty dishes waiting to be put in the dishwasher.

I'm in my first apt with a dishwasher...I refuse to acknowledge that I might ever have to live without one again.
