Like the title says hello everyone. I've been coming to literotica for the last 13 -15 years. Been a member for the last few years but always stayed on the story side, and just recently started coming over to the forum. My profile will say I'm new but I just reregistered to get a better pen name, I don't think narf123 works very well for one. Anyway I finally started writing my first story, I've had an idea rattling around in my head for over a year now so I'm finally going to write it out. Spelling and grammar are my weak points so this is quite an undertaking for me, we'll see how it goes. I have my outline done, it's bringing the whole thing together, filling in the gaps and making it flow that seems to be the hard part for me. It's slow going but I'll get to the end.

I wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if it's in the wrong spot and feel free to move it.

At times I feel like I would like to write my stuff too.. But wasn't sure what to do...

Do you start with character profiles? Or do you build from a scenario?

Welcome to the madhouse to both of you.

The best way to get started is to sit down and start pounding the keys.

Well, it's one way, anyway. An outline is good if you're bent that way. From other threads, there are several ways to go about doing a story. For myself, I pound keys and let the chips fall where they may. My characters do get out of hand a lot but as you will find out shortly as you write, characters are harder to herd than cats. :D

Above all, write what you want to write and have fun doing it.

Welcome to the forums then! :)

What genre are you writing in?

And should you need a breath, slip out the back for fresh air.

Uh... have you been in the alley out back? Cigarette smoke, more or less but not fully, pollutes the air. I'm not at all sure what that fluid is on the ground and the smell is overwhelming. The dumpster is running over and....

That's funny :D I'm not sure which alley you walked out on. :p

Thanks everyone. The outline just kinda happened. I downloaded the word app for my phone to write down ideas and descriptions then write it on my laptop and outline grew out of that. The genre it started out to be in was celebrities, but then I decided to develop my own characters so now it going to go in Sci-Fi & Fantasy. I don't know how long it will take to finish it but I'm having fun and that's what matters.

I'm noob so take what I say with a grain of salt, lol. I agree with TxRad just start pounding on your keyboard. If anything get your main ideas down then come back and expand on those ideas till your story starts to form. I found a lot of help reading in the Writer's Resource on the main story page. I hope that helps, good luck getting your thoughts down in print. And have fun.

One way: Visualize the story in your head as if it were a video, then blog it. Write down places, people, actions, words, events. That's your framework, like the armature of a sculpture. Now slap on some clay (more words), slice some off, finger it, re-shape it, till you like what you have.

Another way: Let ideas of starts and ends percolate. Pick a good setup and a desired ending. Give it a setting and populate it with some players and a few plot points. Set the players loose; let them do their thing; transcribe the action. Let THEM do all the work!

My characters are mostly based on people I know somehow so I don't usually write profiles. I might have a cheat sheet for long-time-span stories to keep track of ages. Invented characters might get an entry with age, occupation, affiliations, but that's about it -- I automatically visualize their personalities.

Stories can be driven by plot, or players, or setting, or combinations thereof. 'Plot' here can be a detailed story outline, or a list of few-to-many plot points you want to hit, or a setup for authorial exploration (like many plot bunnies), or a specific ending to reach.

But I try not to apply any specific formulae. I'll think of desired effects and note some techniques. Tragedy+recovery usually jerks tears and grabs votes and faves. Scooby-Doo-chase usually gets laughs. Oh, Daddy! and Oh, Mommy! grab the pervs; slow innocent seduction of parent or sibling satisfies many. Journal-type stories can string-together endless fucks with no need for an actual conclusion. Anythin in LW will get piles of comments. Et cetera.

So, write. Hemingway said, "Writing is easy. You merely sit at the keyboard and bleed."

. . .
Anyway I finally started writing my first story, I've had an idea rattling around in my head for over a year now so I'm finally going to write it out. Spelling and grammar are my weak points so this is quite an undertaking for me, we'll see how it goes. 1. Consider what sort of story you want to read; what excites you, keeps you reading, turns you on.
Now think of what characters you need to populate this mythical world [BTW; no his 10 inch cock is just too much, as are her 36GG boobs. Just stick to a nice handful, eh?)

2. Spelling & Grammar.
Use a text editor with a dictionary (try JARTE for a Windows thing; it's free).

Grammar might be a bit trickier, for the first. For Americans, the Chicago manual of style is often quoted, or similar (see here) for example.

3. Get someone to be your "beta reader" to eliminate the more obvious mistakes. The get an Editor (there's a forum for it).

And mind the trolls.

Good Luck

Ask six writers how to write and you'll get eight different opinions. Really it's a guessing game, just experiment and see which way works for you.

Thank you for recommending JART I just downloaded it this morning. I was using WordPad with tinyspell and I'm liking JART a lot better. I have two beta readers lined up already, my wife and a friend from work. Then I'll hit up the editor forum and see if I can find someone to look it over.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes, this place seems to be a great place to be a part of.

*Mostly

People around here have long memories.

Do your best to never make a single mistake ever.

Or just put a select few on ignore.

Welcome to both of you. Here's my free advice (and worth every damn penny) - writing takes practice. The more you do it, the more you understand how to do it. Compare writing to any craft and I think you'll get it. I built a deck on the back of my house with plans or a blueprint. It was a simple deck, more a platform than anything else. I'm not a master carpenter, however, I know enough that I could see the finished project in my head. So, I just started building, making adjustments as I went. But the deck on the front of my house? That one required planning. I spent weeks working through the details on paper before I bought the first board. I think you'll find your stories like that, too.

For SalliGr - The real answer is "Yes, you can do it that way." There's not a wrong way to get the story out of your head and on paper. The trick is this: getting the story out of your head and on paper. Start with a scene if that gets you writing. Start with outlining and building character profiles, if that gets you writing. But most of all: get writing!

Write. Write some more. Write it again. Write something different. Throw away everything you ever wrote and start over. Just start putting words down, one at a time and see where it takes you. If you don't like what you wrote, then try again tomorrow. You'll get there if you try, but you'll never get there if you don't.
