Thomas Fitzsimmons High School in South Philly was widely known (like, internationally, not just in the local school board) as one of the most dangerous high schools in the Continental USA. In May 2019 the school had just 435 students, in a school building with capacity for 1,762 students and 249,000 square feet (23,100 m2) in space. At that time 92 students were in the graduating class and 55 of them were accepted to community colleges and/or four year universities. 75% of them were unable to afford the deposit fees. As of 2013 every student is required to go through a metal detector and the school had 94 security cameras. From 2013 to 2019, it was consistently on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's list of "persistently dangerous high schools". Gang activity is high, and a full 50% of the student body is not expected to graduate grade twelve. Thomas Fitzsimmons High School is slated to close in 2027, and the superintendent of schools has denied any further funding for upkeep, development or expansion. They are literally waiting out the clock.
Unfortunately, time marches on, and along with the deteriorating property, teachers continue to age, and T.F.H.S's junior (gr. 9-11) English teacher, Connor Byrne, retired before the start of the school year. So the school is in the unfortunate position to be forced to offer a young, inexperienced teacher a tenured position at a school that has no future.
Who would apply??
