Hey there, Shy Tall Guy. I got to wondering, after reading your post on the introduce yourself thread, and since I've got a plethora of books on a wide variety if useless topics, I looked up the ghost that allegedly haunts Yaquina Bay.
It's allegedly the ghost of Evan MacClure, a captain whose mutinous crew set him adrift on a small boat after taking over the ship. MacClure was never seen again, but a small boat matching the description of the one he was cast off on pitched up on the rocks, empty, near Devil's Punchbowl.
For awhile, MacClure's restless spirit wandered the West Coast, until October of 1874, when the lighthouse was deserted, and the ghost moved in and has been there ever since.
There's also some mention in the legend about a young woman named Zina who went missing in the lighthouse and was never seen again, but there are still bloodstains on the floor of the upstairs bedroom, that her friends found, fresh at the time, when they went looking for her.
There are sundry tales of recent sightings that place the spectral couple together in the lighthouse.
My source for this particular tale is a book called Oregon's Ghosts & Monsters by Mike Helm. I've got a few other books on hauntings, monsters, and supernatural/paranormal phenomena in the Pacific Northwest. I started collecting them because I write horror/mystery stories set in the PNW, so they're good resource material.
Plus, it's kind of a neat look at the region I come from. I'm from Yoncalla, originally, and I've been to the fabled Applegate House - another allegedly haunted place in the PNW.
I recently toured Portland, Oregon's allegedly haunted places. It's just so easy to see where these stories come from. On a cold autumn day, with the mist creeping through the treetops down from the mountains, it's an ideal setting for a spooky story.
So, that's what I know about the Yaquina Lighthouse ghosts. At first, I got them confused with the ghost at Heceta Head Lighthouse. I wonder: is there a lighthouse on the Oregon Coast that isn't allegedly haunted?
