LONDON (Reuters)
Two out of every three young Britons feel ashamed of their nationality, in part because of violence and hooliganism, according to a magazine survey published on Thursday.

In multi-racial, modern Britain, the survey showed that one in four young people did not know what it meant to be British and one in five did not even care.

"What it means to be British has fundamentally changed," said editor Neil Stevenson in the survey carried out by one of Britain's famous youth magazines, The Face.

"Notions of 'Britishness' are in decline. In the face of this declining commodity a new set of self-defining values are emerging. It will be interesting to see how the Jubilee and the World Cup have affected young people's attitudes to their country."

The survey shows pride that does exist is based on former glories like the British Empire, great inventions and football.

Over 83 percent of youngsters want to quit the country and 76 percent thought the government did not listen to their views.

"Young people care about political and social issues but are extremely disengaged from the political system," said Stevenson.

"Disenfranchisement is the problem, not apathy -- perhaps if young people thought the Liberal Democrats had a chance, they'd go out and vote?"

The survey revealed the Liberal Democrats were narrowly the most popular party, with 25 percent support ahead of Labour on 23 percent. However 24 percent would not bother voting at all.

Prime Minister Tony Blair was the first choice when asked who should be president -- if the post existed -- with entrepreneur Richard Branson second and Tony Benn -- Britain's longest serving Labour legislator -- in third place.

Wow, p_, that's pretty pathetic. How do you explain that?

The sorry state of Dental care there...

I still remember seeing "The Big Book of British Smiles" as a child... that'll get you to floss.

I'll field that one

It should be obvious, KM. Britain was once the foremost imperialist power in the world. The U.S. has long since eclipsed it in that role, and now the U.K. has declined to the status of at best a third-tier country. Germany and France both have more dynamic economies, and are in the euro zone-- unlike the U.K. Brittania once "ruled the waves"; now Blair engages in revolting sycophancy to Bush in the (mostly vain) hope of getting thrown a few scraps by the U.S.

Yeah, that must be it. Not enough good old fashioned communist rhetoric in the Spice Girl lyrics. It's a wonder they haven't revolted.

They're all Europeans at heart.

The sense of British nationalism has been in decline for many years. Nowadays it is kept alive by the extreme right British Nationalist Party and the right wing Conservative Party. Both Parties being not too popular with the young.

Since joining the EEC in the 1970s, (later to become the European Union) young people have been raised on a much wider horizon perspective of life than their predecessors. The children of those youngsters have never known any other situation than an expanded, integrated Europe.

They now look upon Nationalism as faintly quaint and old fashioned...

:D

Are you all idiots or just basically mentally retarted?

His words, not mine. The smartest thing he ever said.

That typo is kind of revealing, no?

Revolting sycophany? Someone got a new dictionary!

Redwave, would you mind tossing pp-man's salad? Thank you.

Better than being ashamed to be your child because both you and your hubby are certifiable.

Nah, you can leave when you're 18 and never look back.

Toronto is the child porn capital of the world according to the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Aren't you just so proud of yourself, Unreg?

Calling every one who lives on this island British, is the same sort of generalization as calling evey one who lives between tierra del fuego and Alaska, American.

It's a huge cover all label that takes no account of regional differences. For instance a huge ammount of the Scots will be supporting Brazil against England in the World Cup tomorrow. Because of their traditional sporting rivalry against the English.

Any poll conducted amonst the youth is bound to show their sense of rebellion against the norm anyway.
