Hey nerds, you're a bunch of fucking rapists. Because feminists said so.

I’m a life-long Star Wars fan and a pop-culture lover, but it took me years to realize the subtext of the opening segment in Return of the Jedi, the one where Princess Leia wears her much-celebrated slave girl costume. But once I did, the truth was undeniable.

Princess Leia was raped by Jabba the Hutt.

How many times, I don’t know, nor do I care to know the specifics. But these were the most brutal gangsters in all of the galaxy, the worst of the worst, and so she was. And it was soul-crushing and brutal and something that Leia never spoke of — not to her brother Luke Skywalker and not to her lover Han Solo. When it was all said and done, she was a shadow of her former self.

Although Leia’s rape may have happened off-screen, make no mistake, it happened. And after it was done, Leia was dressed in rags and chained to her rapist. She was nothing more than an object, a toy, for any and all to see.
And for many, if not most geeks today, this particular image of Leia is the quintessential image of geek sexiness and yet at heart it is the image of a rape fantasy.

In light of the Santa Barbara shootings, much has been made about misogyny in American culture, in particular how the men’s rights movement fueled Elliot Rodger’s desire to punish — nay, destroy — all womenkind. While I won’t deny that American culture is at heart sexist — I’ll be the first to admit that I too am often guilty — I think that amongst all of this uproar and #YesAllWomen hash-bashing we’re missing a key point: Nerd Culture is Rape Culture.

My response to him, on his silly website:
It’s bad enough that nerds are characterized as losers due to their nonconformity and demonized by society. I can’t imagine any socioeconomic standard that lists them as anything but a marginalized group in society. They’re the frequent victim of badmouthing, outright violence and other forms of bullying. In some areas of the country, the bullying of nerds almost competes with racial persecution. Seen it myself as an African American kid who struggled against racism. White kids had their gangs, black kids had their gangs to fight back. The nerds had nothing, not even the teachers had their back. Only gays and transgendered people face more hate than nerds did/do.

It’s bad enough that rapists and killers like Charles Manson and Richie Ramirez gets more positive attention from women in a year than all the nerds around the world ever will, combined, in their lifetimes. And that’s pretty much an indisputable statistical fact, whether you feel me saying it is offensive or not. And now you want to push their unpopularity up a notch and associate Elliot Rodgers with nerd culture? Elliot Rodgers, the same guy who worked out and posted on bodybuilding forums (definitely NOT your typical nerd activity), the same guy whose first murder victims were nerds? You’ve basically demeaned nerd culture from the already unpopular world that it is, to the level of domestic terrorism. For no good reason, based on a whole lot of erroneous reasoning and unjustified, raw prejudice.

Great move, Chris Haire. Thanks to you this is going to filter down to the immature juvenile world where nerds are born and made - in school. Given human nature and its predisposition toward hate and prejudice, it’s an absolute certainty that many parents have read your article - and Arthur Chu’s, which you seemed to have gotten this idea from. Your article, and Chu’s, will reinforce their already existing prejudices, then they will communicate it to their immature kids, and voila! Now in their minds they will for once formulate an actual RIGHTEOUS purpose for their physical assaults and verbal abuse of nerds.

But what am I saying, you and Arthur Chu probably intended to cause this escalation of abuse. After all it increases your standing with women as ‘superior’ nerds.
