Hey Look Everybody It's STP!

Heya Marxist, I've been taking care of a little at home business lately, no big deal..how's things going here?

Forgive me Marxist but I do not like your avatar, it is terrible, so brutal, so without hope:( It is not funny, I think. Could you change it for me?

Nessus

Reality is ugly, ain't it?

Although the fried black man av is just a little unnerving on this end as well.

Wow, I havent really been away all that long, I am surprised I would be missed at all...I stopped in for a minute last night, then got called away. It is nice to know though, that people do notice when you have not been around, thanks everyone :)

Finally!! I thought everyone had pulled a Killer Muff and turned off their avs. I'm glad you asked about it Nessus. I will address the gentleman on fire in a separate thread. And no it wasn't meant to be funny. I wish I had two avs., one for political and religious discussions, one for lighter fare like this.

I hope all is well STP. Take your time, man.

That Tibetan monk died for his belief. I think we should give him a little space so he's not forgotten...

:)

That Tibetian monk died for his belief.I think we...so he's not forgotten.

Well put, ppm. Perhaps you could tell us precisely what this belief was that he died for ?

So as to ensure that he is not forgotten, you might want to give us his name and other pertinent info
to assist us in a more comprehensive and meaningful remembrance?

Hey!! It's cold in here!!! Throw another monk on the fire!!!

Laurel

Thank you for the link.

Although you didn't ask, I will give a few views on self-immolation (SI), as well as ask several questions.

I,personally, can see no reason for, or good resultant of SI. There are several things I would fight for; to the death, if neccesary. Death in the process of resisting an oppressor has merits and a nobility that SI cannot approach. To me, trying to stay alive to fight is the ultimate goal.
In this case, is there any evidence or indication that this act accomplished the goals? ...even partially?

I recall this scene on the evening news, vividly. It was all part of the continuing horror-show brought
into our homes in the 60's and 70's.
This particular type of activity set the standard for protest that has yet to be equalled, yet I view it as absolute futility and waste. Perhaps you view it another way, and I would be most interested to hear your thoughts, as maybe I missed some larger point.

Since you dont know me, I will assure you that I am not trying to be difficult or argumentative.
For the sakes of those who might have been offended by my tasteless joke at the end of my last post, I did try to edit it just a while ago, but was unable to do so.

By the way; hello STP, wherever you are!

I have to agree. I've never understood suicide, for any purpose - even martyrdom. However, I can't help but have respect for anyone who makes the ultimate sacrifice to bring attention to a cause. THAT'S putting your money where your mouth is.

As to the effectiveness of the act...we're talking about it now, aren't we?

Laurel,

I do not share your respect for this monk's convictions- to my thinking, his thoughts were horribly misguided. (But, in the world of disagreement, this is insignificant.)

As to the present effectiveness- one has to also look at the "end-game".
This particular act of SI will prove to be phenomenally counter-productive for several million people; most of whom were not even considered by the
"martyrs of Allah" involved. The "effectiveness quotient" of this act will prove to be far less than Zero.

(unless,of course, these gentlemen are indeed being served by 72 dark-eyed virgins in Paradise)

Death is always a bad choice. I don't rememebr this, maybe it was Vietnam? I remember those.

Hi Krankar, it's nice to meet you...

Very well stated points by the way, couldnt have put it any better myself.
