I know you read plenty of history so I wanted to ask if you had read the book Soldiers and Slaves by Roger Cohen. One of my patients was reading it and it looked interesting.

Thank you for asking, but I am afraid I must disappoint you, the only reading I do of recent is in research for three novels in progress and that usually for a specific era or event.

As is so often pointed out, the bulk of my reading of history was during my pursuit of a Master's degree in Colonial American History and even that reading was limited to the period.

I will at least search for a synopsis on the book you recommended and see what I find.

Again, thank you.

Synopsis

In this little-known chapter of World War II history, Roger Cohen reports on how a group of American soldiers were captured by the Nazis following the Battle of the Bulge and transported to a concentration camp at Berga, Germany. These soldiers, who were deemed to be or look like Jews, were denied rights as prisoners of war, and forced to work in a fuel factory. Many died, and those who survived the horrible conditions were quickly forgotten. Following the end of the war, there was no prosecution of the Berga commanders. Cohen tells their story, and explores the curious lack response by the American officials at the time.

The book is available in less expensive e-book format if you are interested.

It is a subject I have read enough of, I simply cannot withstand the emotional trauma of reading more about the Holocaust. For those who have not immersed themselves in the literature of that event, this might well be a good read.

Amicus,

I thank you.

I have read many books on the Holocaust as well as military history of that period. This is a part of it that I haven't read about. I shall be picking up the book tomorrow.

The patient who was reading it was a veteran who was captured during the battle of the Bulge and he recomended it.
