In this little-known chapter of World War II history, Roger Cohen reports on how a group of American soldiers were captured by the Nazis following the Battle of the Bulge and transported to a concentration camp at Berga, Germany. These soldiers, who were deemed to be or look like Jews, were denied rights as prisoners of war, and forced to work in a fuel factory. Many died, and those who survived the horrible conditions were quickly forgotten. Following the end of the war, there was no prosecution of the Berga commanders. Cohen tells their story, and explores the curious lack response by the American officials at the time.
