The US did not miss or void any elections during the Civil War, WW II, the aftermath of JFK's assasination, FDR's death, or the Cuban Missile Crisis. But the enormous ego of Rudy Giuliani has his soon-to-be-unemployed aides beating the bushes to find politicians willing to SUBVERT THE LAW because only he is fit to be the Mayor of New York City. Giuliani now thinks that, if he resigns several days short of the completion of his term, he can serve a whole, additional term! Isn't that democratic? He's obviously willing to leave the city without a mayor while this one crawls into the Supreme Court. Watch closely while this amazing creature shows you who he really is - one fo the most egomaniacal politicians in American history.

While Guiliani appears to be doing a great job with the present crisis, it would concern me that these political manueverings could be allowed to happen. I hope not.

Furthermore, I have heard all sort of stories that would support your reference to his egomaniacal behavior.

Sadly enough, if New York doesn't keep him, I am sure that he will find his way into other political arenas. CNN has certainly helped him by making his every word national and world news.

It sickens me to see anyone, the mayor of NYC included, use the tragedy for personal gain.

A question, please -

I ask all of you out there who live in jurisdictions with term limits: Have ANY of you ever heard of a politician attempting to get around term limits by running again and then resigning three days before his last legal term would be completed? I should mention that hizzonor ran in flaming support of term limits when he was first elected, then tried twice to have them eliminated, lost both times, and now is exploiting the horror to keep his job.
Also that a majority of NYers have consistently told the pollsters that they favor term limits. We just got rid of almost the entire government in one fell swoop and Giulianis's the only one crying - at least publicly.

I saw some thing on the news about his favorability rating right now.

76% favorable
6% unfavorable

All of this is arising because he is doing an excellent job, and NYC citizens want a leader like him aboard for the long haul, especially if we are going to be at war for sometime.

Now, I don't deny the possible strike for gold here, that you claim he is making, but what I see is a possible attempt to do what most of the people in the city want of him.... right now, in the aftermath of this tragedy.

It is hard to say, but he is going to press for more prestige even after his term is up, no matter what happens. That is appearant to me, so I'll just remain impartial, as usual.

But why is he the FIRST ONE in US history?

But no one else has ever pulled this particular trick. Dozens of politicians have had their careers ended this year by the same term limits that Rudy G endorsed so enthusiastically. They are all in the process of being replaced. How legal do you think it is to have one out of perhaps 50 terminated politicians ask for a special set of laws to be passed allowing HIM such special treatment, even as the others are all going down the drain? Some of them are longer and better public servants than he (many are, of course, trash). His sneaky plan will, if he goes ahead with it, lead to a total mess in which we will have no mayor, or two claimants, and lots of court action. In other words, chaos. There's no way the Supreme Court would allow this level of chicanery (and yes, I remember Florida, but this is quite a different case).

You're right... It is illegal. He'll probably cause a big bunch of shit with his attempt, and it'll only make NYC weak as a city, at a time when it is crucial to be bound by our laws.

I see your point. It's a shame.

I cannot agree with what Guiliani is doing. And if I didn't spell it right, it is the wine that I have been drinking.

I saw his "announcement" replayed tonight and wanted to laugh. He fumble with the words when explaining why he was going to try to run again. "For the city." Furthermore, it sounded truly like his plan, as yet to be laid out, is to manipulate and negotiate with the other candidates. Furthermore, that he couldn't identify the plan......whoosh! It really makes me question his motives.

I stand by what I said earlier. Anyone who uses the tragedy for personal gain sickens me.

The responsible thing is to let the people elect their mayor and then, he should spend November and December working closely with the new mayor to facilitate a smooth transition. The rules are in the books for a reason.

Hmmm Now that rant is over!

:D

Now he wants an extra 3 or 4 months -

That will really avert chaos, having two mayors at once.
