Origin of Mutation
Many thousands of years ago, the Mediterranean Region of Earth was hit with a massive meteor shower. Within the fragments of space rock were bright blue crystals, which gave of a sort of mist immediately following the shower. Those exposed to the mists began to develop superhuman abilities, attaining a higher state of being. They gathered the remnants of the meteor fragments, which had stopped producing the mist, and took them to a secluded island for study, an island that would eventually become known as Atlantis.
After realizing that extreme heat caused the crystals to emanate the mist, they granted powers to others they deemed worthy, and became gods to the rest of humanity. Their intellects grew immense, and they created a vast array of ancient technologies. Atlantis became the greatest city in the world, and was the capitol of their new kingdom.
Eventually, the so-called gods began to wage war on each other, the battles from which were the basis of many legends to come. One such god came forth, and discovered a method to rob other gods of their powers. He soon became the mightiest of the gods, and taking the name Ragnarok, set forth to conquer the world. The Atlanteans fought against him, whereas the Olympians (gods that had left Atlantis) joined him after he destroyed their king, Zeus.
In the end, Ragnarok and the Olympians were defeated, turned to stone. The Atlanteans decided their war had caused far too much destruction to the mortals, and vowed to stay out of their affairs. They opened a doorway to another dimension, one without human life. Renaming it Asgard, the Atlanteans relocated there with the crystals and the living statues of their enemies, sinking Atlantis to the bottom of the sea before departing to prevent the mortals from using its secrets. Over the generations to come, the Atlanteans came to call themselves Asgardians, ruling from their capitol city in their new world, Valhalla.
However, unbeknownst to them at the time, Merlin, an Atlantean thought to be dead, had secretly removed some of the crystals from the labs on Atlantis beforehand. Creating several small amulets, he gathered a group of followers and together they discovered various magical arts, some light and some dark. Eventually a dark wizard was contacted by a group of Asgardians that had been banished to an underground prison, and a connection was made. Twisted by their own dark magic, they became demons, and returned to the Earth through this connection to wreak havoc. Thus started the never-ending cycle of trying to send all the demons back to Hel, the underground prison on Asgard.
A variety of other demonic entities came into existence during this time, include vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc. Merlin had gained immortality, and grew distraught watching what his wayward follower had caused. Finally, he assembled the Watchers’ Council, and they began monitoring the supernatural world in secret, doing their best to clean up messes and keep the mortal world oblivious. He tried to recollect all the amulets, but several of them always seemed to slip from his grasp…
Eventually, the number of magical beings diminished, and another group of superhumans came into existence from their descendants– mutants. They kept their powers secret, and passed on these secrets from generation to generation. As the world reached the modern era, both mutants and magi maintained their secrets.
Current State of Affairs
In the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, the US Government discovered the existence of mutants and magi after some of them joined the Communists. Getting their hands on one of the amulets, the government created a secret military base on an island in the Caribbean, where they began using the amulet to experiment with genetic engineering. The material of the crystal was dubbed Terrigen, and the base’s operations became the Terrigenesis Project. The island itself became known as Baxter Island. The Superhuman Hazard Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.) was assembled to watch over the project, while also keeping tabs on the mutants and magi of the world. The directors of S.H.I.E.L.D. were contacted secretly by Merlin and the Watchers, and informed of their extensive history.
In the years that followed, S.H.I.E.L.D. made many enemies, including the terrorist known as Magneto. More recently, in 2010, General Nick Fury was appointed the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and was shocked to discover that the scientists at Baxter Island had been experimenting on mutants and magi for years. One record showed a man being bonded with adamantium.
Disgusted by this, Fury set out to put a stop to it. However, only a few months into his tenure, in early summer, Magneto and his followers attacked Baxter Island, the power-hungry terrorist even going as far as to rip out a passing plane from the sky and crash it into the base. The resulting explosion caused a massive outpouring of mist from the Terrigen, sending a wave of bright blue fog out over the land and surrounding waters, also enveloping a nearby island called Rorosto, which happened to be full of tourists, as it was a huge resort city.
At first, the patrons of Rorosto felt no difference, and went about their lives. However, over the weeks to come, it became obvious something was very different… They were now mutants themselves, changed by the blue fog. They were gradually developing super powers, and a new wave of superheroes and supervillains swept the world.
Thus brings us to the start of the game, September 2010. It has been three months since the Mutant Syndrome Outbreak, as the media calls it. In the aftermath of Magneto’s attack, S.H.I.E.L.D. tries desperately to clean up the mess, rebuild Baxter Island, and keep track of all the new mutants. The secret is out, the veil lifted, the mirage shattered by the media. Mutants are common knowledge now, but greatly feared by most. The world is in a state of unrest, and with the arrival of new mutants, the older ones are also revealing their powers to the world.
Characters can be new mutants, old mutants, magi (wizards, witches, sorcerers, etc.), or other supernatural creatures (vampires, werewolves, demons, etc.). They can be people who have nothing to do with the two islands, they can be employees of Baxter Island and S.H.I.E.L.D., part of the villains that attacked it, patrons of Rorosto, or whatever else you think will work. I’m open to suggestions. Each character bio should include a description of how they got their powers and their lives leading up to September 2010. The common event that brings them all together is a mass scale attack on New York City. Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, Iron Monger, Red Ghost, and Scorpion lead a slew of other mutants and magi against the heroes of New York. People from surrounding areas come to assist, and an all out super-powered war breaks out in the streets.
The heroes that come to fight the evil forces will join together to become the Avengers, watching over New York from Stark Tower. This game will be GMed by myself and NiteCrowe, and we will each play several main characters and a few NPCs.
My main good guys:
Spider-Man
Iron Man
Mr. Fantastic
My main bad guys:
Doctor Doom
Green Goblin
Iron Monger
My NPCs/back up characters:
Doctor Strange
Nick Fury
Harry Osborn
Eddie Brock (will become Venom eventually)
Anyone else needed to advance a plot
Some of my characters will eventually die and then I will take on others to replace them as the game progresses. I encourage everyone to make at least one hero and one villain.
NiteCrowe’s main good guys:
Beast
Captain America
The Thing
NiteCrowe’s main bad guys:
Magneto
Red Ghost
Scorpion
NiteCrowe’s NPCs/back up characters:
The Punisher
Professor X
Anyone else he needs to help advance the plot.
Please post your characters!
