I have always been a PC user, going all the way back to my first 8086 PC more than 10 years ago. I started out with DOS, progressed to DOS-Shell, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95. My old 8086 gave way to a 286, a 386, and finally (and I know its ancient!) a P133.

Now that circumstances have seperated me from my PC, I have had dto make other arrangements. I find myself with on old Macintosh Performa 6300 computer, and I absolutely can't stand it! Yes, it does serve the purpose. I have Internet access and I can do word processing on it, but it's slow, unreliable, and inconvienient. Top that all off with having to learn a whole new operating system, and you can see I am not the happiest of campers.

My question is, what do you use to get on the Internet and do other computing tasks? Do you use a Mac or PC? What generation? How fast, how much RAM, how big a hard drive? What operating system, which browser? Any Linux usesers? How do you like that?

Thanks in advance for your responces to this impromptu survey.

Okay here goes. PC ALL THE WAY

Right now...and dont laugh.
I'm on a 233 Mhtz.
68 MB Ram
Twin hard drives
C: = 8,4 GB
D: + 8,4 GB

I use IE 5, for net browsing (I simply HATE Netscape, NETSCAPE SUCKS ASS)
Outlook Express for emails, or just going into the web based Email systems.
Uses the office 2000 pack for Word processing, speardsheets and the such.
Uses RealJukebox and RealPlayer as Media players.
Napster and Aimster for Music downloads.
AIM, MSN and ICQ for IM's
OS is Windows 98. used to use Win 2k, but all features wouldn't work on it.

Internet speed: Cabel.

My puter is as follows:

Pentium II 450
256 MB RAM
2 20 BG Hard drives
19" Monitor (best $150 upgrae I've ever done)
DVD Drive
CD-RW Drive
I'm gonna put beta 2 of Windows XP on this weekend. Its running 98 now.
I'm using IE 5 to browse the web and the full Outlook for email, etc.

I do a bunch of work stuff at home to, thats why the RAM and HD space is so jacked up.

Currently, my machine is a Gateway (ick). I have one 8.4 gig hard drive running, with another 8.4 gig h/d that's not working at the moment. I have a Pentium II, 350 Mhz, 128 MB RAM, cd-rom, and a cd-rw. OS is Windows 98 SE, and IE 5.5. I refuse to use Outlook, cuz I hate the damned thing. I wanna steal indy's monitor, tho. Mine is a 17 inch with 15.9 veiwable. Look out, Idny. I'm coming to get your pc! :D

Ahh, Skibum, I love these questions. Appeals to the inner geek in me! LOL

1 GHz Amd Athlon
384 MB RAM
60 GB HD
CD-RW drive
DVD drive
graphics accelerator
sound card (of course)
Win 98 (reluctantly i still miss DOS sometimes)
Netscape Navigator. I hate IE! Slow as fuck!
And last, I'm on a poky 56k modem. Due to our messed up phone lines in the area, it gets a much lower transfer rate.

Our first computer was an IBM PS/2 (286). Next was a 486 DX. Yes, you young people, there IS a reason for the distinction. LOL Then a Pentium 166 MHz. Now, this one.

I'm impressed April, you spent the extra money to the get the math co-processor on the chip.. :)

Hey SC - Come and get me anytime you like you hot thing you.

Beware, April. If Draco sees what you have for a pc, he moght be on his way to steal it. I know he wants an Athlon for his bday. the one he's hinting for tho is a 900 instead tho. :)

Indy, if I cum get you, you would never be the same again! :D

Show me what you can do with your hard drive, Indy. :p

Oh yeah, I love big hard drives. But I also like a man who knows what to DO with his hard drive, too! ;)

...

Well I'm running a P90 because its all I got and my Dad was kind enough to give me this once he "retired" it from work. Its got a 10 gig hard drive cos the old one was a measely 500mb. Its running the bare minimum of stuff and i only use it to come on here and if I feel brave, word processing and when I can be bothered Web design with Frontpage editor.

We've had quite few different computer's and i've seen some hefty bugger's as well at my Dad's work. All for computing finances as well.

:)

Oh SC - you know that I can make you overheat with this drive.. Come on over here and I'll whisper it in your ear.

You all know that he's going to be gnashing his teeth in frustration and envy, don't you?

What I know about Frank N. Stein is that it is cobbled together from bits of an old Digital Starion, the technical details of which I have forgotten, and has an AMD K6 processor. I also know that lots of it doesn't work propertly right now, due to the horrendous crash of the motherboard last year and the clumsy efforts at life support.

I have an Evil IBM

Yes an IBM that is a left over school comp from my college. PII 350 mhz
64 meg ram
6.4 gig HD
crappy 4 meg s3 vid card
17 inch monitor
32 X CDROM
win 98
IE 5 but i might get the beta of IE 6

I do have a t1 ethernet line in my apartment. Well it claims to be a t1 sometimes it is so bogged down it is more like a 64k ISDN.

quad 1.5 gig board Athlons
1 gig ram
5 tarebyte
and tooo many other options to list..

o the internet thing t3 connection POWER MUST HAVE MORE POWER..

I turn this baby on and the power company has to do blackouts around the city.. ehhe

LMAO at Indyweasel. Hey, there are so many young kids here, I never know if y'all have ever seen some things. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Xander! I'm gonna git you some day! You little BRAT!!! All bragging about your fucking cable modem. GRRRRRRR

Geek THIS, baby! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/contrib/dvv/boid.gif

Mine's a bitsa......bitsa this, bitsa that

Cyrix 300 Mhz chip.
PC Chips mother board, on board modem, sound and graphic's.
20.5 gigabyte hard drive
15" monitor (free from a friend)
El cheapo speaker's £5 from a computer fair, but I have wired the PC into my stereo(Loud).
Midi tower case.
CD Rom drive 48 speed, gonna get a CD/DVD Rom burner when the price comes down enough
El cheapo mouse and keyboard, gonna get a new KB with mouse pad built in £26 at the computer fair.
strangely this PC work's really well for me and I have very little real trouble with it.

On this list I'm pretty much middle of the road.

I'm running a PentiumII 350
128 meg Ram
8.4 Gig hard-drive
17 inch monitor
Internet Explorer
Access my e-mail thru servers-dislike outlook

The one difference in my machine is my operating system. I'm running WindowsNT. Was talked into it to run Autocad but it has caused me lote of problems trying to pick up inexpensive software.

And I'm on a crummy 56K modem that never comes close to that in real life. Looking into DSL now.

Happily sitting before my tangerine iMac, pondering all the boardmembers happy with the Wintel machines. I also recall the repeated posts from Window's folks complaining about crashes and laborious clean reinstallation of operating system software. I suffer along with

400Mhz
384 MB RAM ( upgrade) Just added 256 MB for $93 including shipping.
10 MB HD (standard)
Mac OS 9.04
Cable modem access
Altec Lansing speaker system (upgrade)

My machine is incredibly fast and cruising the internet is both fast and easy. And initial setup and hookup to the internet took all of seven (7) minutes. It is also remarkably stable.

My first computer was an 8088 clone running DOS. I've worked with DOS - shell, Windows 1.1, 3.1 and 95. It was an epiphany when I first encountered a MacIntosh. The ease of managing files was shocking after struggling with Windows procedures. Windows is still trying to perform tasks the Mac OS has been doing remarkably well for the last 17 years.

I'm not a gamer, so I'm not troubled by the lack of such software. I do graphics and art work which is handled masterfully with Adobe software and text processing is easy with either AppleWorks or Word 98.

I love my iMac!

For those interested in the newest remarkable product from this company you might enjoy checking out the iBook which sells with a 500 Mhz processor for $1299.

I don't see why Mac users are so quick to denigrate Windows. I could do so much more to taylor my sysem to my preferences on my WIN95 machine than I can on this Mac (OS8.6). And I can't get the features in the software I could on my PC. MS Messenger and Internet Explorer versions for Mac are bare bones, and I can't even find an ICQ version for Mac.

iMac (indigo), 350Mhz, 64mb, 7gb hard drive, Mac OS 9.1, and a great box. 56kb internal modem

i've got a compaq right now (almost the same quality as the one my friend built)
but it's got...
700Mhz AMD Athlon processor
128 MB RAM
30 GB hard drive
DVD drive
CD-RW drive
plus the general stuff (sound card, video card, modem, and so on)
originally had win98SE for an OS... but now has win2000

i have aol for an isp... but i hate it.... so i use the IE browser...
i also use aim and msn for im's
