i really do believe that the learning experience is enhanced by being in the same environment as real people.

having completed distance learning courses i learnt more on the few occasions where we all got together. bouncing ideas of each other in"real time" as opposed to "virtual time".

there is definately something about seeing people's expressions as you put forward concepts for debate.

People can learn anywhere and alone if they have the desire. But scholars arent what we're talking about. We're talking about the 50% who dont graduate high school. Eliminate them and their teachers.

Yes, of course, it would be better to have a QUALIFIED instructor with you in the pitch/field/diamond/court, etc. The instructor can give the athlete real-time instruction as the athlete trains. There is no better method. However, QUALIFIED personal trainers are EXPENSIVE!

Probably the next best method is to have a highly QUALIFIED instructor coach the athlete/student via multiple feedback. By multiple feedback, I mean specialists are available, in a non-real-time to answer questions that even a QUALIFIED instructor may not be able to answer. What I mean here is perhaps best illustrated by a simple example. The athlete has a QUALIFIED instructor who can teach the mechanics of sprinting on the track. However, the instructor is NOT qualified to teach the athlete about nutrition or weight training. Instead, specialists give the athlete advice in a non-real-time fashion.

If the athlete is instead a student, the student can ask questions of an instructor who is highly qualified in a specific sub-area of knowledge. Bestof all, the student can ask the question of several instructors who are highly qualified in a specific sub-area of knowledge. The different answers will almost alwas solve the student problem. The answer that finally solves the student's problem may not be the best answer, not even the best answer for tht student. It is not a single short thing. Each answer adds knowledge aqnd, poehaps even confusion. However, the sum total of all of the answers will almost always solve the problem.

If I seem to hammer on my point of view, I independently developed the idea of interpolation when I was in grade school. My idea worked, but the TOTALLY UNQUALIFIED 'teacher' had no idea of what I was trying to do.

Indian teachers will not work. Anyone whose first language is Hindi or Bengali will have such a strong accent the kids will not understand them.

I think it is a good idea to export jobs to India. The more money they have the more they have to spend. India is more important to the USA as a market than it is as a rival. the US is starting to enter a post industrial economy and there is no looking back to an imaginary industrial nirvana.

I guess the US system must be different from the UK system. Over here you're not allowed to set foot inside a classroom unless you've had the intensive training and got your teaching diploma. There are no such things as unqualified teachers here - everyone has to jump through the same hoops, regardless of what sector they're going to teach in.

Maybe a better teacher training programme in the US would be the key?

The ultimate question is: How do YOU compete with someone who earns a fraction of your pay?
The answer is, you cant.

My state outsourced 100s of clerical jobs to India. That is, Indians now handle most of the business people have with various state agencies. If you want information about your retirement you talk with an Indian. Indians decide if you qualify for unemployment or workman's comp. And they earn a lot less than the Americans they replaced.
