It was the year 2045, and humanity has come to a breakthrough in medical technology. Cybernetics have grown to a expectational rate, to the point where any part of the body, be it limb or organ, including certain areas of the brain, can be replaced with steel and silicone. Heated debate has sparked over regulations and limits..as many people who could afford the surgery have payed to have replacements made, almost to the point of more extreme plastic surgery. but instead of changing or enhancing a cosmetic area of the body, one can push themselves beyond limits of normal humans.

Dr. Alexander Walker is maybe the most talented cybernetics surgeon within the united states, operating out of new york city and not only installing, but constantly testing and creating new parts to cure and better those who wish to change. He was a man focused on his work, a man though married, was busy for many hours in the day, many high profile clients wanting his work: football players wishing enhanced limbs, singers wanting enhanced vocal cords. though he's taken the time away from those so he can help a blind child see for the first time with cybernetic eyes or a cripple to be able to walk again..this was the work he preferred, he felt as he was helping people..not having rich privileged come to him to have their penis replaced with a larger one that preformed like a warming dildo as their lovers are unsatisfied with the normal thing.

But tonight he didn't have to worry on that..he was coming home early to his wife..though spurned by him he felt guilty..he genuinely loved her and was finally able to find free time within his schedule to take her out on a date..like he did when he was a lowly medical student. Little did Alex know that tonight would be a event that would truly test his skills..

Athena Walker

“Dr. Walker, you have a call on line one.”

Athena pushed the talk button on the intercom. “Thank you, Daniel.” She pushed her papers together, forming them into a neat stack before placing them into her patients folder. She picked up her office phone holding it between her ear and shoulder. “This is Athena Walker…” She said as she typed her password, unlocking her computer.

“Hey, did you get the reports I sent over? I’m telling you heart surgery will be too much of a risk for Chris…”

She rolled her eyes, leaning back in her chair. “Hello to you too Dr. James. Lovely to hear from you! Look, we have no choice, the kid is in critical condition. He needs the surgery and if we don’t do it he will have a higher risk of dying. I’m the best surgeon around, the kid will be fine with me operating. Besides the parents want to try it.”

She heard him scoff through the phone. “Athena, I’m not doubting you. I know you can do it. I’m just not sure Chris can handle it. He’s a very delicate child.”

She laughed softly. “He’s been holding on for years now, Chris is stronger than you think. The surgery is happening, it‘s already scheduled for next week.”

He sighed. “Alright fine. But if something goes on it’s on you. Bye.” Click.

She hung the phone up and pushed herself back up to her computer. It’s always on her. That’s the problem with being a surgeon, one thing goes wrong and it can be deadly. But, she was the best in the field. She hadn’t lost a patient yet. Her eyes moved the wall beside her. A wall filled with thank you cards, letters of appreciation, and pictures of happy, healthy people. She took the time to learn everything she could about a patient before opening them up to insure safety. She took no chances for things to go wrong.

That’s why she was the best.

A few hours later, Athena yawned rubbing the back of her neck. Time to go home for the night. She thought as she gathered up a few files and her stuff, tossing it all into her large briefcase. She wondered if her husband would be home early tonight, they hardly saw each other lately. Both working all the time, both overly busy. She knew it wasn’t the best for their relationship, but she loved him so much. He had such a kind heart. He could make tons of money working with the rich, but instead he helped those who really needed it.

She pulled her coat on, wrapping her scarf around her neck. She picked up her phone, dialing his number, reaching his voicemail of course. He was probably neck deep in some assignment. She left him a message as she walked out of the hospital. “Hey babe, it’s me… I am leaving the office right now. I was thinking about ordering some Italian for dinner, what time will you be home? Love you…”

It was icy out, the winter was a harsh one this year. She pulled her car out of her spot slowly, hopping on the main road toward their home. She drove carefully, trying to avoid hitting ice patches. The road to their home was curvy and dark. The cliff leading to the forest deep and at the edge of the two lane road. She sped up a little, to make it up the small hill, her tires trying their hardest to grasp the frozen streets.

She only had two more dark corners to take before she reached their driveway, when her phone rang. She quickly fumbled to pull it out of her briefcase, worried it was Alexander calling. She groaned softly as her fingers searched through the papers to find it. She finally grasped it, pulling it out when she came around the last corner and slammed on her brakes. Her car fish tailed as she tried avoiding the two bucks standing in her lane. Her car skid, losing traction, slamming into the steel barricades on the edge, smashing through them. There was no hope, she knew she was only seconds away from crashing into the trees below.

----------------------------------------------

“What happened here?” The detective ask, his eyes fixed on the crushed car.

“Not sure what happened, but the barrier up top is broken and tire marks shows a car swerving toward it.”

“Who’s the driver?” He asked, shining his light into the interior.

“Athena Walker… she’s luck to still be breathing. The ambulance just pulled away, taking her to the hospital. Damn near every bone in her body was crushed. They said she had some internal bleeding, a punctured lung, god only knows what else.” The cop shook his head. “I can’t believe she survived this…” He waved his hand toward the crash. “The car rolled quite a bit when coming down. Then impaled itself on the tree. It‘s a four hundred foot drop.”

The detective sighed looking away from the blood stained seats. How could anyone survive this? “Has anyone called the family?”

“No sir… not yet.”

Alex didn't respond to her message as he was in the middle of another surgery. He was on the road as he attempted to call his wife when he finally got out "Althena..hey..this is Alex..I'm so sorry..had a leg I had to recalibrate...I'll be home soon.." He made it back to their place, a large modern home that was more humble look, so not to flaunt it's wealth. After some time Alex's phone rang, a young woman's voice coming through on the other end "Dr.Waker? This is Lords mercy hospital, I know you had taken the night off, but a emergency case came in, critical condition to the point where the body barely is alive...their coming in now. Could you come back to the office?"

Alex was hesitant "..umm..I'm sorry Jenny..could you get someone to cover? I..was gonna take the night off.." he spoke recognizing the receptionist's name.after a moment there was a sound of shock "..Doctor..I think you should come in.." Alex paused "..Jenny..I don't like the sound of that.." "Doctor..it's..your wife. She was in a car crash.." Alex froze in fear..his heart sinking..a pang of horrid, painful greif built into him as he then pushed it down almost growing cold "..I'll be right there.." he got up and fled through his door..if it was not for automatic locks he would have forgotten to lock it up..he didn't get anything else but his keys as he got back in his car and turned around heading back to the hospital.

When he arrived he stepped out flashing his card to the receptionist and stormed into the emergency room, A mix of many emotions but all under this cold calm exterior "Where are they going to preform surgery on Althena Walker?" he asked firmly to a nearby intern..he pointing him the way as the other doctors were getting results from X-Rays and learning how bad that damage was "Her body is completely crippled..and we are losing her fast..I don't think we have much options." Alex bursted in as he spoke up "..We rebuild her body..we have a prototype frame here..we can build off of that and remake her body." The doctor looked at him like Alex was insane "..first..who the hell are you and who let you in here? Second, the prototypes not tested, we are not sure if it's actually able to support the human nervous system effectively yet.." Alex looked to the head doctor "Dr. Alexander Walker..that woman's husband and the best damn cybernetic surgeon in this damn state..I am not letting you give up on her..."

Athena smiled as she wrapped her arms around Alex’s neck, it their honeymoon and they stood on the beach in Bali. She kissed him softly on the lips before pulling back. “Have I told you lately how much I love you?” She whispered as she stared into his eyes.

It was a peaceful time, both just finished with medical school. Her major was heart surgeon, his was cybernetics. That’s were they met and fell in love. They dated throughout school, married shortly after. Athena was so happy with him. But sadly, after the honeymoon both went into intern programs and later surgeon’s positions. They lost time for each other, but the passion still remained. The small time they spent together they wasted no time loving each other.

Athena laughed as Alex lifted her into his arms, spinning her around before running them into the water. She held tightly as he dropped himself, emerging both of them into the crystal clear water.

She knew it was a memory, their honeymoon was years ago. She couldn’t recall what happened leading her see this memory. Last thing she remember was driving home. It was snowy and she was excited to get home and spend some time with her husband.

---------------------------------

“Dr. Walker, we are doing all we can to keep her alive! I don’t think that giving her an elective surgery, rebuilding her body will do much good! Her body is badly damaged. Her mind in a coma and we haven’t even figured out if it’s fixable. She could be a vegetable for all we know!” The doctor shouted as he glared at the man. He knew of the Alexander Walker’s studies and his talents, but he had doubts about the doctor’s abilities to repair a patient so crushed.

The nurse interpreted, pulling the doctor’s arm. “We need to stop the internal bleeding.” The doctor nodded pushing past Dr. Walker, heading to the victim. She was crushed beyond all belief. How was still live as it was? He wasn’t sure. He pulled the cart to him, grabbing a scalp to open her up. If they didn’t stop the bleeding, she wouldn’t be living for much longer.

-----------------------------------

The doctor pulled off his masking staring down at Athena, he knew her work as well. Even though she didn’t work at their private hospital, she instead worked at the local community one not to far away, he knew her by reputation.

Her body was broken, bones shattered, organs badly damaged, he would find out how bad her mind was after they had a chance to run an CAT scan. He sighed, brushing the brunette locks away from her face, her hair tangled with leaves and twigs, her pale skin covered in small cuts and already formed bruises. He could tell she was a beautiful woman, regardless of the recent changes in her face. Dr. Alexander Walker was a luck man. Was.

The doctor was frozen..just a barrel of emotion as he took a moment to breath, his memories flashing by..from that honeymoon only a year ago..how any woman would have wanted to be with this man..though he was handsome himself, he was hard on himself about it. Watching the doctors work as he had a determined look on his face. "All you need to do is stabilize her..keep her brain alive..I can do the rest.." again, having a few free moments to look back at him the doctor responded "You very well know.." Alex interrupted "YOU very well know thats she's gonna be dead soon anyway if she stays in that body. Even if you do stop the bleeding, she will most likely be a vegetable for the rest of her short life. Her body is too damaged to support her..." The doctor was a older man..he respected his medical experience but too small minded. "I can save her from death..." with that last word he fled out of the room and began to back to his department.

Soon enough he was gathering what he was gonna use to first make the base of her body to stabilize her, a heart, lungs, basic digestive system..all synthetic, all made of cold plastic and steel..he knowing people with at least one of these and made a 100% recovery. He very well know that this was not guaranteed to work but he rather risk it then as he said, have his lover suffer a short life as a vegetable. With that he obtained he also brought out the basic metal skeletal frame as of now a chest cavity, hips and a skull..all made of steel. Almost looking something that sky net would have made. Bu if this works, not only that he could save his wife's life, he could prove to the world his work. It was not just silly science fiction, not a sicking affront to god but a natural stage in human evolution. He promised himself though, his wife would not be on display though she would be the first to be nearly 99% cybernetic. He would keep her away from the publicity. With all of the material, and tools he needed, he rushed back to the room where the surgery happened he grabbing a nurse walking by to help him with equipment not exactly easily mobile..

The doctor sighed turning quickly as Dr. Walker reentered the room carrying tons of different items. He couldn't even being to understand the items he had, after all he was a emergency doctor, not someone who specialize in robotics.

"Look Doctor, I don't agree with what your planning we have no idea if her mind is even functioning properly, but I do know her body is completely done for. She'll most likely be dead in a few days unless someone takes action. My nurses will assist you if needed." He held his hand out, shaking his had softly. "I wish you luck, Doctor." He picked his jacket up, folding it over his arm. "I'm sorry this happened to you..." With nothing more he gave a small nod to his nurses then exited the room, heading to his office. The idea of putting her through an intense surgery like one needed to replace her body seemed crazy. But of it was what needed to be done to save her. She was a rare gem, he knew, someone who has done so much for people.

It would be a shame for someone so kind to pass.

"Dr. Walker? My name is Eliza, I'm here to help however I can." Eliza said clearing up the old supplies. "What can we do to help?!

Ge took a moment as he set everything up he looking back "her body is damaged beyond repair..but to remove the brain would be pointless..we would need to repair and replace.." he spoke looking back "You place in a false knee, a prosthetic organ and such? It's going to be the same..but far more extensive..that's the part you have to worry about..I'll handle the robotics.." his field had both a large collection of both medical and engineering knowledge...though his skill was more the mechanical side "Eliza..from the start we got to repair her caved in chest cavity..replace the organs that are damaged..stabilize her..that's the first goal...from there I can place in her limbs.." he spoke looking back to her "..her brain..they are ways to keep it from turning inactive...but .that will be the most complex work..that I can take care of.."

He looked down at the work he is about to do..and there was a moment hesitation in his determination..his wife will be one of the first few fully converted cyborgs..a being over 80% machine..there was a momentary hesitation..that full knowledge he very well could be seen as a modern Frankenstein..a monster who would abuse science to play god..he then pushed it out of his mind..no..no..this is right..he was going to save his wife..and show everyone that human evolution has not stopped..

Athena couldn't see with the darkness around her. She felt hands touching her... pinching, probing, cutting... but she couldn't see who was doing it. Was this the end? Was she dying?

A small light formed off in the distance. In the dark it looked like a small star on the black sky. She wasn't a religious person so she doubted it was a gateway to Heaven or Hell. As her mind wondered as to what it could be, the light grew closer, larger, until it was at the point of blinding her. She winced, holding her hand over her eyes. What was this?

Then the light was interrupted and a shape could be seen. A shape of a human walking toward her.

"Athena...." the figure whispered, his hand moving toward her face. She recognized the voice instantly.

"Alex!" She shouted, crossing the short distance to wrap her arms around him. "Alex, baby, I'm so sorry.... I don't want to leave you! It was an accident. The deer--"

"Shhh..." he hushed her, "I know... it's okay. You're not leaving. I promise to bring you back."

Her brow twisted in confusion. "Alex, I don't understand."

"You will soon."

Then he was gone and darkness embraced her once again.

Eliza sighed, rubbing her eyes lightly. It had been fourteen hours since they began and only now were they finishing. All of the nurse, including herself, were tried.

"Dr. Walker? Is this all?"

-gives a nod to Eliza- "..yes..that is all, thank you.." though at a glance this would not be the case..as before them was just a limbless robotic torso with a head attached, reconstructed but recovering "..now to do the rest.." The doctor took a moment to reach into his coat pocket and dry swollow some caffinee pills as he was accustomed to "..you go home now..I'll talk to HR about taking money some out of my salary to supplement all of yours for this.." with that he began to pull a cover over the woman up to the head and wheeled her out, aiming to bring her back to his department. She was stable but she needed more work..

It was over 3 days he worked straight..it was obvious from the light smell of Body order and the dark circles under his eyes he didn't get a wink of sleep, but he was determined..seemed to be the only thing that kept him working and working efficently. Very soon that robotic torso was reconstructed to look very well like a womans torso, full robotic limbs reattached and covered by synthetic flesh..the only thing he needed to do now is connect everything together. One of his assistance was looking over his work with a whistle of astonishment the young man looking to him, he was a engineering major interning with the cybernetics department "So boss, she is almost all robot?"

There was a pause from Alex as he spoke up "No..not a robot..this is a fully converged..or full-con Cyborg. Though she looks human..over 80% of her body is synthetic..most of her skeleton, her muscle structure..about half her organs.." he spoke, over the colth that covered her body his hand rested over her wife's hips "..only organs I could save was her lower digestive system and her Uterus..along with her brain of course.." he spoke as he just silently looked over his wife in silence he mumbling to himself "..and I've become the new Herr Frankenstein.." that doubt slowly crawling back. Yes..he was at the cusp of success of what he wanted..but he knew..KNEW that the "Humanist" league that protested his work would see his lovely wife as a monster and he a man who would abuse science to play god..
