Since many of you are a wealth of helpful information, I was wondering how some of you treated hemorrhoids?

I take sitz baths and tend to add epsom salts and sea salt to it. Does anyone else have any tried and true recipes for helping cure hemorrhoids?

I've not had them. We treat them in the hospital with anusol or a similar brand. if they're extremely uncomfortable, we give stool softeners to prevent straining and encourage hydration to keep the body hydrated.
really though.. it's hard to tell how bad they are and it's a valid reason to see your doctor - especially if you're not sure what has caused them to become so angry.

Along with what Giggle said, use an ice pack. I know it sounds weird and rather awkward but they're inflammation when you get down to it. One of those pliable cool-pack, with a towel/cover will help with the pain and swelling.

The stool softener is very important too, straining makes it worse, so lots of water as well.

I occasionally suffer, for me preparation H suppositories work the best.

After a shower or sitz bath, a cotton pad soaked in witch hazel applied to the area can help greatly.

If you want to shrink them then Cypress and Juniper essential oils are very good - but they're highly astringent and you shouldn't apply them neat.

Get a small bowl or dish and half fill it with warm [not quite hot] water and add a few drops of your oil of choice Fold up a face flannel into four and soak it in the water and apply to your tea towel holder* as a compress.

Other oils that are recommended are Myrrh and Yarrow, but I've never used those.

*Are you still reading these? How about Khaki Eye?

Hydrate, consume more fruit and veggies, use ibuprofen for swelling, get a bidet. Also, to avoid more irritation, consider wiping with wipies.

more:
Fluids (water) vegetables, I find having a healthy amount of fiber helps.

less:
sugars, greasy foods and fats (foods that bind your stool up), coffee/chocolate/soda (caffeine) those are diuretics (dries you out), spicy food

Using "softer" toilet paper.
Not doing any sitting for lengthy periods of time or sit on plenty of cushions.

before anyone panics.. chocolate is a natural laxative. the cocoa husks are a source of fiber and the caffeine can actually stimulate the bowel.

True, it does sometime give you the "hershey squirts," but notice I said LESS, I didn't say "eliminate"

It's like smoking. ask any doctor and they'll say smoking makes blood vessels constrict which is bad for the heart blah blah blah, yet they also will note that most smoker's heart rate also slows down after having a cigarette, which is why a savvy cardiologist will tell a smoker to try to smoke LESS.

holy crap.. don't get me started. if your cardiologist advocates any tobacco use at all, I would ask to be referred to a physician who has read a research article anytime in the last thirty years.

So, you would advocate the idea of making a die hard smoker who isn't "addicted to nicotine" but is rather mentally addicted to smoking, IOWs they WANT to smoke, and by forcing them to not smoke which would increase their heart rate until... POP!?

For the record, I was that mentally addicted smoker. While every doctor I went to said "you really shouldn't" they would say in the same breath (and NOT while condoning chain smoking) say restricted smoking would be better. Ultimately, they want your heart rate down. Period. If your heart rate slows down from doing something like jumping out of a perfectly functional aircraft at 2500 feet, then do it!
Also for the record, I used to smoke 5-6 packs a day. Mostly 1 pack during work (can you say 'government worker'?) and then the other 4-5 packs after work when I would go out to shoot pool. If I didn't smoke, my heart rate was crazy insane.

However, quote your medical scripture all you like.

Fiber

I had my hemorrhoids surgically removed. It is not a fun experience. My current gastroenterologist said the goal is to have large-diameter soft stools. Laxative use can actually make it worse if you have watery thin bowel movements. You need pressure on those veins to make them healthy but not with straining. He told me that studies have been done on tribes of people who eat huge amounts of plant matter, tribes that have never reported a single case of hemorrhoids. Bring on the cabbage! :) I now eat at least 60 grams of fiber a day and drink 80 ounces of water.

See a doctor and good luck.

Tribes also don't use toilets. Squatting makes straining more unlikely too.

This is pretty much the worst piece of advice I've ever read on here. And yes we will quote that evidence based scripture.

Tucks medicated pads work to ease pain and itching. They were life savers to me during my pregnancies.

Before you go to bed, slide a clove of garlic where the sun don't shine. In the morning, it will pass naturally. I've personally never had hemorrhoids, but I know a few people that have used it and swear by it.

Yes, I'm actually serious, you can quit laughing now. :D

Please don't put garlic up your bum. Please don't put anything up your bum unless it's got a flange on the end of it (or a wrist, or a man if you're into that sort of thing).

That said, the guys in A&E love telling an object trapped in the rectum story.

I'm just glad you aren't a doctor. You'd kill me from hypertension on the spot while saving me from possible long term health risks like cancer and lung disease and probably feel smug about it at the same time.

"We?" Are you a royal person or are you speaking for everyone now? Does it make you feel your point is stronger by saying "we?" Going for the popular vote, huh?

You talk more like an ENTP than an INTJ.
