I'm hoping some of the computer savvy poster here (Weird Harold for one) can help me here.

The problem is that my sisters windows 2000 computer have been infected with spyware, and I have a hard time removing it. I've run ad aware, and it found and removed some, but it didn't fix it all. I can't identify the spyware, but here is what it does:

When I search for "spybot" in internet explorer or firefox, it closes down the browser window. When I try to install spybot search and destroy, it closes the installation down. Spybot were installed before, and when I tried to run it, it closed it down. When I try to save a document in Work, it closes it down without saving it. When I try to run regedit, it closes it down.

I've tried to ge into safe mode, but I still can't install and run spybot.

Do anybody have any suggestions?

trend micro is a good one, it has a free trial, it removed a lot of stuff on my computer

also, STOP USING IE, everytime I open it on my computer, it jacks it all up

spysweeper is also a good one

also bit-defender, has a free trial it's an anti-virus, it really cleaned up My computer as well

Have you run the online spyware/popup check Laurel has linked from the Front page?

Trend Micro's "Housecall" might be able to find your problem -- it sounds more like a worm or virus than "spyware."

Norton has a register edit function that might not be blocked, and there are programs like "HijackThis" that are specific registry repair tools that look for Malware entries.

You might be able to make a bootable CD to get into Safe Mode and edit the registry that way.

If all esle fails, take it to a Computer Repair shop -- they generally have ways to get into system files not generally available to regular users.

I'm scared to take my computer to a repair shop, they will see all my porn

If the "spyware" is blocking sites, I'm wondering if it isn't a virus, not spyware. I think Norton is crap. I would get the new PC Tools download and run it free for 30 days. It cleaned the hell out of my computer.

** Nice ass, BouncingBetty :p :p :p :p

Thanks for all the advise here, it helped me figure out which processes that were prevending spybot from running, and it also prevented bitdefender from working properly. But once I got the processes stopped, it got rid of all the viruses and spyware removed from my sisters computer.

I also suggest a computer help forum. Anytime I get a problem that is out of my league, I take it to somewhere like thetechguys vbulletin forum and post an appropriate thread containing all the info (read the posting rules first).

There is usually a separate section for posting hijack this logs. It takes time for the experts to answer but if you really want to get rid of the problem, that is the most fail safe route to go imo.

spyware

if spybot search and destroy isn't installing download adaware. it will remove the cookies.malware.. etc from your computer so you can download and install spybot without issues. and to reitierate what another poster said DON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER!! It's nearly impossible to avoid spyware, malware, adware and other stuff if you're using IE. The more open source programs you use the better off you'll be.

Try downloading CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) Its brilliant for sorting out all the crap of your pc. Its best to run it after you have used all the relevent spy killing software.

Its free too! :D
