Help with DirectSound

I can't get any sound to work on my computer. Windows (XP Home Edition) was reinstalled a few weeks ago, and since then I havne't been able to get any sound to work. An error message saying "Unable to initialize DirectSound. It is usually caused by not having DirectX installed, another application that has already opened DirectSound in exclusive mode or the Windows WAVE device has been opened."

I have DirecX installed and downloaded the latest update for it earlier today, I have no other programs running, and I don't know what the Windows WAVE device is, so I can't do anything about that. I've already done some google searches but they didn't turn up anything at all useful. How do I get it to work?

It's entirely possible that the driver for your sound card isn't installed. If you don't know how to, visiting the website of the designer (say, www.creative.com for a Sound Blaster) will get you access to it.
