Help with animation maker?

Does anyone know where I might find a free or cheap program that allows you to create your own animated movies and characters, such as non-human characters? Like make-your-own monsters? This is not for me, it's for my son. We've been looking on and off all day but not quite finding what he wants. I realize what we want may not be there, or be cheap, or whatever, but any help would be appreciated.

We've looked at things like Moviestorm and GoAnimate but it's not what he wants. (It never is )

It's a big difference if you are talking about 2D or 3D. Also if you have an apple computer or a windows computer or something else.

Ah, thank you. I don't know that 2-D or 3-D matters; we have checked out Blender, which I think does 3D. We have Windows machines and my son is eight, so he's just looking for something to learn with. Well, that's what he's looking for but he's impatient -- wants to start out doing everything at once.
