Help! Stockings or tights?

Men's garters and suspenders

Men used to wear garters with socks because they were not elasticated or stretchy. Without some form of hold-up they would bunch around the ankle.

Boy Scouts, in my day, wore knee length khaki coloured socks with a coloured tab protruding below the turn-over at the top of the sock. The garter, a half-inch band of elastic, was concealed by the 3 inch turn-over and only the coloured tab, sewn to the elastic, showed.

Suspenders for men were different. They fitted around the bare leg above the calf muscle and had two hanging tabs like those on women's garter (suspender) belts but usually in a dark colour such as black, blue or dark grey. The tabs clipped to the upper edge of the sock at the front and back of the leg. Men's suspenders were invisible because of the length of the trousers and the socks.

The problem with garters and suspenders is that the elastic material didn't last long and would perish. A snapped suspender or garter meant baggy socks - uncomfortable and a sartorial no-no. Garters needed to be replaced at least once a year.

Elastic or stretch tops to socks killed garters and suspenders except for Scotsmen in formal wear. The garter held up the Skean Dhu tucked into the top of the sock.

At a glance, your character strikes me as more practical with her undergarments than sexy. With your setting taken into consideration, I would have to vote tights. Yes, tights do bring to mind images of little girls in easter dresses, but they are usually thicker than hosiery or stockings, therefore warmer. I do agree with subjoe about the crotch problem, it's not very sexy. Plus, any tights or hose that I have ever worn do not come off easily or in a sexy way, and usually come all the way up to my tits. (Also not attractive)

Another suggestion: Why not black lace panties and some sort of knee high black woolen socks? Very warm and you could play with the texture of the wool. Also, 'woolen' is kind of a sexy word. Check my spelling, it's not a word I write often. I may have missed an 'l'.
