Are videotapes recyclable? Can I simply put them in my recycling bin as I do other plastic stuff?

I'm trying other sources, but this crowd seems helpful on a great variety of subjects. So, thanks!

Video tapes do have some metal parts, but those shouldn't present any problems for the recycling center. Your local trash collection company would have the definitive answer, but I'd certainlyclass video tapes as "plastic" for sorting into recycling bins.

Thank you. I searched through my local's website but couldn't find an answer, nor get anyone on the phone. I'm thinking the tapes will qualify as plastic, just wondering if anyone knew of any 'hazardous' substances that go into their makeup.

I got a nifty little brochure in the mail last week, teeling me how to sort stuff for recycling. Only problem is, even if i sort it, nobody collects it separated. So blah.

Anyway, according to that, videotapes don't contain anything that would put it in the electronics category. One might have thought magnetic tapes contained something toxic, but apparently not. So it files under burnable plastic.

Well, that settles it for me. I've got 8 paper grocery bags full of videos I will never watch again. Btw, I used to have to sort but now just dump everything (paper, plastics, cans, glass) in one bin; the recycle people do the sorting. Thanks for posting.
