I have a gift certificate for 50 US dollars for Amazon.com.

It has conditions:

1. I can't use it to buy from Amazon outside the US.
2. I can't use it to buy from Amazon auctions.
3. I can't use it to buy downloadable or digital goods.
4. I can't use it to buy gift certificates.

Then I have encountered other obstacles:

1. Many sellers will not ship outside the continental US.
2. DVDs etc are usually Region 1 and unusable in the UK.
3. Electrical goods are not always compatible with the UK electricity supply.
4. Shipping could take much of the 50 dollars for even a moderate weight.

So...

What do you suggest Og could buy from Amazon in the US that is light enough to ship to the UK, is totally unnecessary, and is suitable for a writer of mild erotica?

All serious and frivolous suggestions considered.

Ha! I have 200 to spend and have no idea how to get a shipment where I am. However, I thought there was an Amazon.UK? :)

Otherwise? I think K-Fed is selling Britney Spears panties for a reasonable price. :|

Buy something- have it addressed to someone (a friend/relative/someone from lit) in the US, and then ask them to send it to you- reinburse them for the cost :)

I've done this very thing for my mother's husband. They live in Scotland, btw. Not from Amazon though. It was from Best Buy, but it amounts to the same thing because he couldn't get the item over there and they wouldn't ship it to him.

"Hi. You don't know me, but my name is Og from the UK and I have a business proposal for you. I have this money, you see..."

Sounds like a Nigerian scam to me. :)

Damn, how'd I miss that part?

But there are many e-books that Og could get. Didn't some Lit people have some on there somewhere?

Hmmmm.....What all is considered a "digital good"? Does that mean received digitally like downloads or does it mean anything purchased must be completely analog? :D

If it's the former, Mat's UK lappy won't recognize my US external hard drive when I plug it into her USB port, it does recognize USB flash drives from the US. You can get a lot of memory for $50.

Ogg, if you do have something shipped to a US address to be passed on to you, you'll have to pay duty on it unless they mark "gift" on the customs form. When we all met up in P-town for Lucky & Vella's wedding, Mats forgot one of her shirts at the B&B and had to pay duty on it when the owners mailed it to her (even though she had brought it to the States from England in the first place).

Wouldn't e-books be considered downloads?

Condition 1 in my post says I can't use any other amazon except the US one.

Thanks to everyone so far.

I think e-books are covered by Condition 3.

I have donated US dollars to Friends of Pine Ridge but this time I wanted something that the Inland Revenue (UK version of the dreaded IRS) wouldn't claim.

What about jewelry, Og? It's lightweight, so shipping wouldn't be bad... and you can get a nice little bauble for the wife, and perhaps a blowjob thank you out of the deal? :D

Discussed with my wife. The only jewellery she wears is her wedding ring. The rest sits in her jewellery box gathering dust.

She would like a gold watch. I don't think 50 dollars (including shipping) would be enough.

I have purchased books from both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de and had them shipped to the states with no problem. I would assume the reverse would work as well--buy from the USA and ship to UK.

Music CDs are the same in both UK and USA, I believe.

Some electrical items are dual voltage and would work with the proper setting, assuming you get a plug adapter. Or purchase a transformer, for example, http://www.amazon.com/Adorama-Adapt...id=1167939922/ref=sr_11_1/102-8985018-9662544.
Yes, music CDs are the same. My mom's husband always buys a ton of CDs when they come over because they're so much cheaper over here.

It gets more complicated...

Searching through amazon.com for CDs and shipping rates, I found this:

Please note: Buyers outside the U.S. cannot purchase the following types of items via Amazon Marketplace: video games, toy and baby items, electronics, cameras and photo items, tools and hardware, kitchenware and housewares, sporting goods and outdoor equipment, software, and computers.

CDs or books seem the most likely items.

Jesus...they might as well be saying, "Fuck off ya limy bastards."
WTF is up with that?

Og: As I recall, you have a new granddaughter. How about a selection of children's books?

They're not saying "Fuck off ya limey bastards" but "Fuck off anyone not in the continental US i.e. the rest of the world".

I can't understand it either. When I had my small secondhand bookshop, I shipped to anywhere. I shipped books to Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, the rest of the US, Japan, France, Germany, Israel and India (in order of frequency). I liked my customer in Alaska. He kept coming back for more.

Amazon won't quote shipping rates for a long list of items so I have no idea how far 50 dollars will go. It's about 9.79 dollars shipping for one DVD and then I need the right region (2).
