Help me Understand Story 'Stats'

Sorry for being so thick, but I still don't quite understand the 'scoring' numbers on our 'Works' page. Here's a screen cap of what I mean:

I get that:

- the hearts are 'likes'
- there are 20.9K page clicks
- there are 9 comments

So the values after the star are what I don't get -- in this case 4.61 / 418.

Does this mean that 418 readers rated the story somewhere between 1 and 5 stars? Or 'voted' as folks often say?

Authors often say they've been '1 bombed' -- how can they tell from this?

Can you calculate the average 'rating' from this? In other words, the average number of stars per 'voter' based on all the folks who voted?

Are there other ways to analyze these two numbers?

Again, sorry for all the dumb questions...

Thanks

Oh good grief, I think I see it. The 4.61 IS the average -- 4.61 stars per voter? Gawd, I really am thick...!

You got it.

If you monitor the change in votes then it's sometimes possible to back-calculate the value of a single vote from the change in the score. People who say they've been "1-bombed" may be doing that. Otherwise I think people assume that a large drop in the score means they've been "1-bombed."

In the example you gave, 418 is the number of votes, and 4.61 is the mean score that you received, meaning the total of all scores divided by the number of votes.

With a number that large it's impossible to tell what the breakdown is, but the probability is that the votes are mostly 4s and 5s. If there haven't been any sweeps yet there may be a few very low scores, but with a 4.61 score you can guess that there aren't too many bombs.
