Help! Low Blood Pressure!

I had my blood pressure taken this morning, and it was 84/58. I don't get it - I smoke, I eat junk food and I have a high-stress job (around 60% of my colleagues are on meds for high blood pressure) that involves tight deadlines, working in the evenings and over weekends and constant confrontation.

Although this is below normal, it apparently isn't a problem if you have no adverse symptoms from it... which I don't. But I also read that if it starts getting too low you can suffer from dizziness and blackouts. I don't want that to happen, so before it does could I please have some suggestions on how to raise my blood pressure.

Thank you, Litizens :rose:

Find an amicus thread and start replying?

i believe its inherent...like those really skinny people with cholesterol levels so high, that i swear their blood is pure sludge. i say, dont worry about it too much. i also have low blood pressure but it only ever gets to me when im really tired or exert myself too much...wonder if you arent anemic too...those two things seem to shake hands.
best of luck to you sexy.

You simply have to become me, then you will have a BP of 155/98.

That better?

Oh, and you'll also be told to stop smoking, cut out as much fatty foods as possible, eat a much healthier diet, get more excercise.....and you'll also have to take meds that mean you can't drink alcohol, have to check up with the doc every time you want to take something as simple as a cough medicine (like now), or an over the counter pain killer. And you have to put up with the pernicious and inconvenient side effects of the drug.

Given the choice, I think I'd rather go with your option.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Lilelvis, I think I'll take a rain check on finding an Amicus thread! Apart from anything it's a complete and utter waste of time. Because I don't possess a penis my words are usually ignored, no matter how pertinent they are, so why waste energy typing them?

Vella, Mat... You're both right. I should quit worrying. I don't think I'm anaemic. Last time I looked in the mirror it looked like I had a good healthy colour. I guess it's a lot easier this way round than having it too high and having to curb my extravagant little lifestyle

Eat more salt. That is the easiest way. But also have your BP checked a few more times. There is always a chance the equipment or the person who used it was malfunctioning that day.

It's because you're Welsh Scheh. Now that the incredible Mike Ruddock and his sidekick, Thermonuclear Tanboy have won the Grand Slam, it's obvious that the universal panacea for all Welsh woes has been achieved. No wonder your blood pressure's so low.

Try supporting England. Then, when you see that £1m has been wasted on a league convert and Iain Balshaw is still getting picked, you'll be amazed at how fast blood will come shooting out your ears.

Unless you start having problems, I wouldn't worry too much. I have had low blood pressure for years with no problems. Biggest issue for me is that I get cold very easily.

Dcotors told me low blood pressure is not really a problem. (Mine is not as low as yours though.) It's better than it being high.

Too true. I've always assumed there's a genetic component, too. My mother's got low blood pressure and even with all the caffiene, nicotine, and stress pulsing through my body at any given moment, I usually come out at the very low end of the "normal" range.

Stop riding around on your bike for miles and miles, take taxis or buses at every opportunity. Cease raising your pulse rate every time you see something in a skirt. Get into the worst relationship you can find and move to somewhere less scenic and more polluted. (has the Splot improved at all? If not move there)

What do you drink Scher? Dehydration can produce a low blood pressure reading. If you don't drik a lot of water and most of your drinks have caffine or high sugar content, you may just not be fully hydrated. A few glasses of water a day for a wweek should fix you right up, if that's the case, if you can stand drinking water.

Mine's very low as well - has been for years, despite smoking and too little exercise most of the time.

The only time I have any problems with it at all is in the summertime if I let my blood sugar get too low as well. Then I'll drop like a rock...blackout. Other than that, it's never bothered me, and since I know what to watch out for...when I start seeing those swimming little white dots at the periphery of my vision, it's time to eat something.

Thanks for the warning. ;)

As Ms. E.W. said, add a touch of salt to your diet and have your pressure checked a couple of more times. She's right, sometimes machines and people screw up.

As for raising your B/P/, you can always do what I do when I need that pressure boost. Eat a Chili Dog or three, followed by a couple of Snickers Bars, washed down with a Chocolate Shake. Then sit back and watch Jerry Springer for about half an hour. (If that doesn't get the old pressure up it's because it killed ya. )

I used to have blood pressure like that. Once I tried to give blood when the Bloodmobile was at some festival or other in Baton Rouge...they told me to go smoke a cigarette, have a Coke, and come back--mind you, this was back in the early 80s--so I did, and my BP became high enough they would take my blood.

Time will take care of that problem, scheherezade. That was over 20 years ago, and believe me, my BP hasn't been that low in quite a while--in fact, it's a little on the high side, especially since the standard for what constitutes high BP was recently revised.
