i've been on a mad frantic insane search for coffee essence and cannot find it in the states. Anybody know where to get it online, or somebody willing to get some and ship it?

I'll look.
Get back to you tomorrow.

Shucks.
*shuffles feet, looks up with puppy dog eyes*

This is one of the items you could buy in the UK - my folks used to use this as instant coffee when I was a kid, before freeze-dried instant coffee powder came on the market. Good old Camp Coffee.

It's been so long since I've bought any, I have no idea if that's what it costs in the UK.

Another thought.

If you can't get hold of coffee essence, or afford it, and its for a cake, maybe a coffee and walnut or some such, simply use instant coffee in a small amount of warm water (to help it dissolve). Just enough to make the granules or powder easier to mix. Always worked for my coffee and walnut sponge cakes.

It can take a little more than the essence, as its not so concentrated, but its a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run.

That was actually suggested in the recipe, but...

This is for a special occasion. The Bodyguard's birthday is coming up, and he's been craving food from 'home' (Irish native), and has flat said that it's just not the same if you use the instant coffee. i can't afford a whole lot of anything, but i CAN cook, so the plan was to overload him with foodstuffs. Coffee essence a necessity.

I went to one of the best delis in Edinburgh today and they didn't have any!
Argh!
'Camp' I can get from the local shop. I'll get some tomorrow morning.
My gran in Dunfermline always made coffee with it. 1950's kitchen, kettle on the stove. She used to look for four leaf clover in the back lawn. Fed her cat on cornflakes- it lived to 21yo.

Happy memories.

You rock, yet again!

And thanks, mat, you paper! :D

Now... i was just asked, by said Bodyguard, if we get somebody in the UK a list and pay for the goodies, will you pick up some candy bars and ship them over? He says it will save us about half the amount of what it would be to buy them online, shipping included.

Let me know what you require, I'll see what I can do. :)
Sheesh! Food parcels to the Colonies!

You've fed US, you haven't fed the Irishman.

Besides, if he gets food from home, i get more and better sex. Alterior motives are good things.

Only in Boston.

No tax on foodstuff. Except chocolate biscuits.
Cadbury's chocolate is going cheap!

I've witnessed firsthand the joy of food parcels coming from across the pond. 'Tis beautiful to behold. ;)

This is a good thing!

The list is being formulated. It's about 7 or 8 items. So far.

We'll skip the Cadbury's.
Unless you want salmonella?

And so have I. We have both received food parcels from 'home', and both were delighted with the contents.

I received Marmite, Marmalade and Bisto gravy browning from my house-sitter, and marmite, tea and maltesers from Vella-mia. I'm still working my way through the two jars of marmite. Yummy. :)

Min received a whole package of candy and sweet goodies for Easter from her mom.
