Disclaimer: I have no personal opinions and just want to understand what she might have been thinking. I am curious only as a writer. I might fictionalize the conversation and include it in the novel I am currently editing.
My car was having troubles so I was using public transportation for a few days. I stayed too late at a library and found myself having to locate the all-night bus route when I was fifteen miles away from home. I ended up waiting at a bus stop in a somewhat seedy section of town for half an hour.
Anyway, a woman came walking down the street and propositioned me. I declined. She shrugged indifferently and started waiting for the bus. She was high on something but sufficiently lucid. After a few minutes, perhaps out of boredom, she started talking.
She explained that she made at least $250 an hour and only worked with a certain type of clientele (so to speak). I gave no reaction but for context her story clearly didn't fit the neighborhood or her wardrobe. She went on and on, listing celebrities and giving me a rundown of her "career" as if fishing for me to explain why I had declined. It was as if she was trying to justify herself or brag about how in demand she was.
So I simply said the truth: I have a steady girlfriend and am focused on the relationship.
That led to her explaining her own homelife: She has a ten month old son and a steady "boyfriend". She pays a neighbor $50 a night to watch her son, and she gives the boyfriend $100 a day to support his music career. She explained how naturally he is destined for rock stardom. That way the boyfriend can pay her way through [name of local community college] and she can become a lawyer!
Then she went off on a tangent meant to preempt any negative opinions I might have about prostitution. Again, very defensive and challenging me to say something negative about her. I just listened.
After a bit, seeing as how I didn't say anything judgmental and accepted her previous justifications at face value, she brought up the reasons she got into prostitution. Paying bills, taking care of others, etc. She explained that it was a sacrifice she was making for others. (Five minutes ago she had bragged about how she enjoyed her work.) I just murmured sympathetic sounds.
Then she propositioned me again, somewhat more desperately. I firmly told her I wasn't interested. Then she started listing her problems: how she and her "boyfriend" were set to be evicted from their apartment, how she hadn't eaten today, etc. I told her I had no extra money.
Finally she got angry, told me I wasn't superior to her, how would I like to be poor, maybe my kids will starve, etc. I cut her off with a firm "I hope it gets better for you but this is not my problem" and that was the end of things. She stomped back up the street and the all-night bus finally showed up about ten minutes later.
Okay, obviously this is a sad story but what would have been her mindset while talking to me? At first she tried to put up one image as a defense mechanism but a second version that probably more closely resembled reality was inadvertently (or deliberately?) revealed. Would there have been a logical thought process such as preserving self-esteem or was it someone who was simply desperate for money?
What was this prostitute most likely thinking as she sat there talking to me for ten minutes?
