I've been contacted by someone who wants to commission me to write some stories for him.

YAY!

He's got one he wants me to finish, and then other story lines he'd like for me to write. The deal's all but done, but he's asked how I want to price it, and I have no friggin' idea what to tell him.

Help?

Never done this, but I do have some experience talking price.

Ask him what he thinks is fair. There's always a chance it is more than you think is fair. If so, quote 10% higher and if he goes for it, do it. Otherwise, take his offer grudgingly as "an introductory price"

If he refuses to giive you an amount, quote high. You can always go down, never up.

Say, "This should take me about ten hours of work. At $20 an hour, that's $200." Insertwith your own time estimate and $ / hour . $200 may sound high to him, unless you force him to think about things like time & fair dollar per hour amounts.

Or put him in touch with me and I'll be your agent. 40% is the standard rate. :D

Ask wishfu. She's setting up a site to do commission work, so she has to have a price schedule :)

Five cents a word is pretty decent these days, commercially. It should give you a place to start.

Thank you!

(I was hoping you'd see the thread. )

Then again this is cloudy here. That'd kind of be like asking DaVinci to paint your house and asking what a fair price is.

go 7 cents a word and just smile and wink if he doesn't accept immediately.

;)
