Hey everybody! I'm a newbie myself, hopefully will be posting a story of my own, once I get one written, but having some real trouble getting started.

Does anybody think it's really important to know what category your story fits in before you start writing? You know, just to have a direction in mind?

Sean

Category would not be the highest thing on my list - character, setting, plot. Once you have the characters in the situation, I find the kind of sex they have follows.

But it's only my second coffee this morning.

Velcome. Bienvenue :D:rose:

I work out the category once i've written my story more often than not :)

Hello and welcome seaniesean :)

Hello and welcome!
It's not critical to think of the category now. Write what you want, make sure it is as good as you want, and then choose the category. That can be difficult if it crosses more than one, but it's more important to write a good story first, and then slot it in somewhere later.

Afternoon Sean and welcome to the AH. My first recommendation is to get over to the 'Writer's Resources' section of Lit and read through some of the essays there. WhisperSecret's work is worth reading and I've heard good things about my two essays. Trust me, there's a lot of wisdom in that section and it's well worth reading.

IMO, I wouldn't say you need to know what category your story's going to go into. I just write mine and then see where they should go afterwards.

If you need any help, then I'm sure most people on the AH would be willing to volunteer.

Good luck,

The Earl

Welcome Sean,

And no, category's probably the last thing I think about. What I usually do is find the most offensive thing they do in the story and list it under that. For instance, if you have a story involving whippings, incest, and people wearing plaid pants with checked shirts, list it under "erotic horror".

*chuckling*............definitely!

Welcome Sean.

Lo sean, welcome, I'm with Lime on this one, write it and submit it, admin will put it where they think it needs to go, they always do regardless of the cat you think it should be in.

Never worry about the tech bits of posting a story, just write as you feel comfy, then if need be edit it later, if you piss about trying to make everything perfect as you write, you'll never finish.
