Tall tales linger about things that lurk in places they shouldn’t. Crocodiles and alligators in sewers, entities that you see in a mirror that evade your sight when you look back at them, shadows that move in the darkness and a plethora of others stories are centered around this phenomena. They’re not exactly true, but sometimes people still wonder.
The Keeney Swamp is one of these places with tall tales around it. Keeney Swamp is in NY state near Grove and Birdsall in Allegany County. Allegany Count is a county in NY that tourists and visitors tend to forget exist in NY. Usually when someone thinks of NY State they picture the obvious New York City, Buffalo or Albany. Large places with skyscrapers that are as large as the eye can see. Each with a plethora of things for people to do be it places to go, or things to see.
Allegany is a county that dials it back. Lush greenery can be seen for miles in certain places. Thanks to the laid back approach natural things thrive here. Like the Keeney Swamp State Forest. There is a mixture of different natural beauty. It has many trees that form wooded areas for people to romp around within. Then, there are the infamous wetlands.
The Wetlands are what most people expect. A swampy place where bugs, various water thriving plant life be it certain animal, instinct, plant or small organisms. These swamps are not immune to talltales. A lot of campers and park workers throughout the years claim to have seen some kind of monster. Like the swamp came to life and a piece of it roams the wetlands as if it is its domain. Unfortunately, no one can confirm or deny this.
Like any urban legend the story changes a little bit. First it was a story about how this creature dragged away a blond woman. Then the blond woman was pulled under the water after skinny dipping. Eventually the blonde became a brunette then a redhead. How she was taken changed so many different ways people began to loose track.
Just like its alleged victims the appearance of the creature changed too. Some would say it’s a large pile of brown muck with bits of green, arms, hands, fingers, a large gaping maw with no teeth come to olife. Others would give it more of a human appearance. Sometimes he looked lik the swamp tried to create a person made up of greenery, with dark soulless eyes and the body of an Adonis. Everyone blew off these tales because they had been around for decades.
No one could ever prove the swamp had taken people. It didn’t help how the park had a few female workers that just one day quit and stopped showing up for work. Their missing cases fueled fires, but most people just dismiss the swamp. There are those that try to hunt for the creature, but have been unsuccessful. Even now in 2015 people still keep an eye out whether it’s locals, park workers, tourist or interested parties hoping to prove or disprove the existence of the creature.
Most dare not to cross it’s path, but there are a few that try…
