I rarely get headaches, but right now I've got one that's a killer. It's a sinus/allergy headache, centered around my ears. Feels like I have a fist-sized ball of pain in the middle of my head. I took Sudafed non-drying sinus formula and a Tylenol. I'll let you know how it goes.

But I thought this would be a good time to share headache stories. Any migraine sufferers out there? Anyone had a headache that turned out to be a brain tumor? (Not sure if I want to hear those stories right now, lol...) What do you do to get rid of a headache?

 Put a frozen juice can at the base of your skull. That works when I get killer headaches. As for headache horror stories, I'm afraid I don't have any. Sorry that you're hurting, LaurelinaBoBeena.

I'll try that! I don't usually get em either. I'm not big on taking pain killers, either, because pain's your body's way of letting you know something's wrong. But this is one monster headache...thanks for letting me whine!

I usually take Excedrin for migraines, but when they get unbearable I take Amerge. They're a prescription and work better than any of the others I've tried.

I think we should amputate! LOL

I don't get them often - maybe occasionally during certain times of the month - if you catch my drift :)

Then nothing helps except going to sleep.

But my family had a technique that, on the surface sounds strange, but it really does seem to help. Get Manu to place one hand on your forehead and his other hand on the back of your head and squeeze as hard as he can. This compression somehow serves to alleviate the constriction of the blood vessels and opens them up to allow unrestricted blood flow again.

Or it could just be that it hurts like hell and you forget about the original headache pain that you had to begin with! (You know - like when you stub your toe and to distract yourself from that your older brother hits your hand with a hammer? Uh, whaddya mean my brother is the only one who did that?)

If all else fails, try this resource:

One of the best cures for a headache is to eat an orange. It's simple, safe, and very effective. There's probably a medical reason why it works, but I've never come across it.

Several years ago, I was experiencing excrutiating headaches almost daily that were stress related. Relaxation and an orange worked much better than the prescription the doctor gave me. Getting a new job helped to reduce them to an occasional occurrence.

Try massaging your temples, there's a big nerve cluster goes right through there and it helps I find to rub it a little.

HORROR STARY:- A few years back a guy I was working with had a runny nose, all day long he kept blowing it and all day long it kept on running.

Anyway this guy goes home and his wife notices he's a little sluggish and not himself at all, in the end she drag's him to the A&E dept of the local hospital and by this point the guy can hardly keep his eye's open.

The doctors check him out and find the stuff coming out his nose is the fluid surrounding his brain and he was pretty close to death when they got him, a week later he's back at work a as fit as a fiddle but it was real close there for a while.

anyway good night hope you feel better tomorrow :D

Laurel, I get those headaches all the time, just as you described.

Hot water run over washcloth, as hot as you can stand. Then wring it out and put the hot washcloth against the side of your head, just in front of your ears and along the hair line. It may take 2 or 3 trips to the sink to heat up the washcloth again, but it works.

I've been getting migranes for ten years.. and this is what I do...

We always have ice packs in the house... home made ones (3 parts rubbing alchol, 1 part water) I put one on my forehead, and a heating pad on the back of my neck and switch the two every 20 min. all the while I am in the darkest quietest place in the house (my room), and trying to sleep.

Fiorinal with Codeine. They have to write it up in triplicate, but it's worth it, because I'm sorry to say that sounds like a migraine. There's a natural shot you can get that doesn't contain any pain killers, but it usually requires a trip to the hospital. Other than that, you can try hot baths, rest, and a combination of caffeine and aspirin, which reduces swelling of blood vessels. I hope you fell better soon. :)

If it's a sinus headache, then ice will make it worse because it doesn't sooth the sinus passages. Heat makes it better. I followed Chey's directions and oh my gawd did it work.

The headaches I get have no known cure beyond sleep. Sorry I can't help. :(

when i got a migraine a minor one, i'd pop 9 excedrin migraine strength and sit somewhere quiet and pitch black.

for the reallty bad ones, i'd down 12 and sit in the dark while my brain felt like it was shredding itself.

but then again, i have high drug tolerance and i'm a chronic migraine sufferer.

I get alot of migraines...

:p

Oh boy I bet you are totally confused now

:p

there's always putting ur head i nthe freezer, at least it feels good...

I'm a migraine sufferer and I do what my doctors recommended. Stay away from foods that seem to trigger the migraines. Pork is a major one for alot of people, as are diet sodas. Caffine, as Siren mentioned is a savior. Here is a handy bit of info on that score, a Mountain Dew has more caffine than coffee, it will help also because the chill will get rid of some of the pain too, and on a sinus headache, it will help break up post nasal drip at the back of your throat which can lead to sore throats. The Excedrin is a good tip as well, if that, or Excedrin Migrain, does not help, there is a perscription med called Caffergot. One thing you should do is go to a doctor if you think you are getting migraines, they can be serious. Prevent headaches is the best way, take the meds at twinges of pain, or sinus pressure (most dosing recommendations are so low, you can do this safely, so says my doc) and don't skip out on any daily doses of caffine that you normally take. For migraine sufferers, there is also the idea of taking half of an Aleve once a day to ward them off as well.

Arghh Migraines! At the first indication (in my case floaties or sparkly things in my vision) I take paracetemol and light up my insence burner with lavender oil in it. I too have food triggers, coconut oil, oranges and dark chocolate. Another trigger is being extremely tired and strobe lighting or flickering lights.
For me they are extremely painful. The worst migraine i ever had was for three days and I was in the first trimester of pregnancy with my second child so I took nothing but went to bed in a dark room, wincing when my four yr old slammed the door or brought his mates to visit his sick mom. Worst was when he forgot and slammed the back door! I cried and the pain was worse!

i use to get very bad headaches when i was young ... tons of trips to the hospital for brain scans and things trying to find out what it was ... was a mix of things in the end that i never got all the answers too but luckly i grew out of it some and dont get them quite as often

if your feeling preasure around your nose or eyes its sinus and you may have to considor going to the docters for anti biotics if its a serve infection

the towel above the hot water is a good idea but also make sure your drinking plenty so your well hydrated water is good or orange juice for the vitimen C

i usually just goto bed and moan at everybody about how i feel and try and get as much sympathy as possible it helps some :) anyway i hope you feel better laurel *hugs*

if you have this problem, but generally when I get bad headaches it's because I haven't been eating or sleeping well for a few days and I'm under a lot of stress. Order in, relax and let yourself sleep in is my suggestion-to me the big key was eating better. I used to be at less than two meals a day and I was functioning ok, but I kept getting these nasty headaches-but I had as much energy as normal-and I was never hungry, in fact the thought of food made me sick When I went abroad, I couldn't stop eating and I felt a hundred times better. my appetite came back, I was more energetic than I can ever remember being and happier -that might be because I was under NO STRESS as well... So relax, Stuff yourself, and go to bed.
It is called a stress headache, they are related to Migraines. It is what is called "an occasional migraine" and they can be just as bad. Just avoid the types of food that cause them, and relaxing really does help.

There's only two things wrong with your cure

1: You wasted the extra money for "migraine strength" excedrin, because it's exactly the same formula as "extra strength" excedrin with a different label for about 10% more money, and about four times as much money as the Equate Extra Strength two pack you can get at Walmart -- Equate doesn't have an 'E' stamped on the tablet, but it's exactly the same as Excedrin.

2: Taking that much aspirin (Excedrin is about 50% aspirin)will cause intestinal bleeding eventually -- not CAN cause, but WILL cause.
