Having second thoughts

FIRST black president, FIRST black champ, FIRST black golfer... is there a pattern there, or have I just lost my sense of humor?

Hopefully, a few less black men will grow up thinking that only white people have the chance to be seen as people.

As I see it, the pattern is a black guy breaks through into what had previously been a white domain. And, though it's picky, Tiger Woods is hardly the first black golfer and he's not even the first to be a winner on the PGA Tour. But he's definitely the first ever to deserve to be discussed in the same breath with Hogan, Palmer, Jones, and Nicklaus. He could well own every golf record of value by the time his career is complete.

I'm hopeful that many, many young black men will begin to see this pattern and aspire to a life that goes far beyond the neighborhood they currently roam with few options and fewer ambitions.

I can see the difference in my classroom between the ones who have no doubt that they can do anything anyone else can and those who are so wrapped up in "attitude" that they may as well just peg out now. Tragic, it is.

Hear about the MJackson edition Ipod?

Comes in black and slowly fades to white. Only plays children's songs.
