...so couple of questions:

1 - What is the PF&D forumers and poets expect in a review?
2 - Are there regular posting poets that rather not be reviewed?

Some time ago for a variety of reasons it was decided to change "review" to "recommendation" and since then the chosen person lists, either the poems he/she deems worth a read, or - as in my case - the whole lot (unless there are more than 10) with comments, not really reviews.

The thinking is if a poem is submitted and appears for all to read it is fair to expect the writer will welcome new ideas. I suppose a person could add "no discussion" at the end thereby avoiding any advice for improvement.

Thanks, Tess. Glad it's recommend instead of review now. I had in the past felt inept in reviewing poems when I was/am a novice poet.

No one can be inept at forming an opinion. I think an unspoken standard of providing "critique" with review was hanging over the New Poem's Review thread so now that it's a "recommendation", there's a distinct relaxation about putting a poem or a poet up there. I don't read as many as I should these days, maybe I'll be able to get back into it all soon.

I have no idea.

I gave up trying to pick poems to recommend, so I just picked Tuesday. If a poem shows up on my day, it gets a recommendation. Some recommendations are more enthusiastic than others.

I don't know that anyone has any particular expectations. Like Tess, I don't try so much to review the poems as to read them all and make some kind of mention of them. I do try to cover them all (or at least all that have posted by the time I write my post), but if there is a large number of them I may not mention all of them due to lack of time.

If I like a poem in particular, I will state that I "recommend" it and also leave a comment to that effect on the poem. For most poems I usually end up commenting about its subject or style (especially if rhymed or formal). Sometimes I might quote a line or two.

I think whatever you decide to do, whatever amount of comment or interpretation you want to make would be fine. All of us are "novice poets," when one gets right down to it.
2 - Are there regular posting poets that rather not be reviewed?
There is one poet I do not comment on, but I think just the one. If someone asked me not to comment on his or her poems, I would of course refrain from commenting on their work. I think Maria avoids commenting on people who don't have comments turned on, which makes sense to me--if they don't want comments on the poem itself, it would seem you could infer they don't want comments on the poem anywhere. I'll probably adopt that as a rule myself.

Anyway, I think the rule of thumb for the NPR thread is trust your feelings, Luke. Most of us just appreciate someone is willing to do it.
