America's conservatives have been on the wrong side of every important public issue since independence. No exceptions. None. Not even Reagan's defense buildup and economic policies.

That is, every issue on which there were identifiable conservative and liberal sides.

We can easily say conservatives were wrong on slavery and Jim Crow and women's suffrage and the New Deal and the Vietnam War.

As well on all culture-war issues such as women's lib, gay rights, the sexual revolution, school prayer, creationism.

But it's harder to say which side of, e.g., the Free Silver issue was "conservative."

And then there's immigration. We usually think of a hard line on immigration as "conservative" But the Libertarians are generally reckoned part of the conservative coalition, and there are Libertarians who want a constitutional amendment that says only, "There shall be open borders."
