A U.S. Congressman from Georgia, Rep. Paul Broun, has accused Obama of trying to create a federal paramilitary police force and set up a Marxist regime. Thoughts on this claim by a high-ranking member of Congress? Is he paranoid, nuts, or onto something that has escaped the rest of us?

Oh, shit! He found our secret lair!! I'd better sound the alarm, disband our glorious legions, and send word by carrier pigeon to our great Stalinist leader--er, ah, I mean. Gosh. Sounds paranoid to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is a Bircher. This reads like JBS talk, which I would know. I was a Bircher once myself. They are so keen on conspiracy theories that they make Oliver Stone seem sane.

Tell me, does yon Congersbody address his constituents dressed in a brown uniform under torchlight?

Ironically, he implied that Obama does. He referred to a "Gestapo" kind of force being set up under the name of a civilian national security force.

"Erase all the files, especially the ones detailing Obama's plans for redistributing the wealth! And burn those armbands! We'll sell the left-over black boots on e-bay! Just list them as riding boots, they're in style now. Also the statue of our leader in that Lenin pose with wearing the Mao jacket. With Obama-mania going on, someone's sure to to buy it."

Oh, er, hi. Yes. Well, now that the congressman has backed down we can forget all this silliness. Yep. Silliness. Completely ridiculous.

I heard it. Only July 2, 2008 Obama gave a speech in Colorado and said the following:

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."

The direct quote is here:

The fullest version of the speech I could find is here:

Draw your own conclusions, but the senator is not crazy.

Edited for typo.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. We already have that in Britain. It's called the Police.

We don't have individual state/county police. We do have county police that are branches of the national police force, none of the leaders elected, all appointed by the national organisation through normal promotion pathways, working by the same rules, wearing the same uniforms, etc. etc. And as part of that we have the branch of the police working against terrorism.

What we don't have, thank god, are non-qualified, elected local sheriffs. I'd rather my local law enforcers were properly trained, and know what they are doing, and are unable to implement whatever little jumped up ideas come into their heads.

On thinking about it this makes sense. Not his statements, but why he made them.

Frontier America is frightened out of its wits. It can't face the real reason for its fear: that the frontier as they knew it is gone and will never return, that they no longer have a place in the modern world. So they create paranoid fantasies such as these to explain and focus their fear.

Get used to it. It's going to get much worse before it gets better.

I believe he was referring to the National Guard, which has been weakened and diluted by sending them to Iraq.

As far as a paramilitary force, I wonder if this Congressman is bothered at all by Bush's use of Blackwater Security in Iraq, Afghanistan... and even New Orleans. Talk about a scary organization!

What is frontier America?

Rural - you know, those pro-America parts of the country where all the Sarah Palin patriots live.

Okay, we might as well admit it. We're talking about Texas. Even more specifically a couple of one mile areas that just happen to surround Lee Chambers' and Lisa Denton's houses. Odd coincidence, that...

I never realized that the city of Houston was considered to be the "frontier" of modern day America. :D

It was their complete lack of accountability for anything they did that I took issue with.

Are you kidding? Lisa D. out there in the wilderness with only her dog and a flashlight to fight off wild beasts and terrorists! She barely has power to run her computer  Frontier indeed!

Hey, I live in California, remember. As far as I'm concerned the "frontier" starts someplace the other side of Las Vegas and ends someplace around Baltimore... :D

Yeah, it's all that other part of the continent that will sink into the Atlantic when The Big One hits and turns Riverside into a port city.

That's a pretty broad generalization.

That was Sarah Palin's generalization, not mine. I was referring to her comments on the campaign trail when she said she was glad to be in the 'pro-America' part of the country, which, I believe, was Kentucky.

Ah, yes, the promised day. When only California and New York (across the new American ocean) and maybe parts of the Pacific Northwest if they recant their belief in the myth of rain, will remain. What a glorious day that will be.
