Witht he exception of children for those of you that have them, have you ever placed someone else's happiness over your own?

Nah. I'm entirely too selfish. I've been known to usurp Saturday morning cartoons to watch a documentary when it's about something I think I desperately need to learn. See, I keep telling you people I'm mean but you don't believe me. Proof positive.

Yep, sometimes you have to, in order to make a situation better for someone, even if it's NOT better for you. (just MY opinion though)

Too often! Sometimes I think I need to be more selfish, but it just isnt in me to be like that.

KM- who says we don't believe you?

To answer the question, I think most humans would say "yes."
How important that is though depends on the degree of what you are talking about. Major life decisions? Where to have lunch? What color to paint the house?

Major life decisions?
Yes. That's how i ended up in white supremecist country for the last two years.
(I'm moving back to civilization on Dec 6th. Yay!)
Where to have lunch?
Yes. When there's an absence of anything approximating ethnic cuisine in one's immediate area, one sometimes says, "Oh, i don't care at all," in response to the question, "Where do you want to have lunch". Such an answer can be a big mistake. (Yes, an ostensibly Mexican restaurant can totally fuck up the preparation a taco. And don't even get me started on the Inland Northwest's version of a chili relleno...)
What color to paint the house?
No. Oh no. Oh HELL NO. I pick everything relating to color, have for many years, and will continue to do so. T, my soon-to-be-former husband, has some kind of genetic inability to choose colors that complement each other in any way. MS, my next one, is certifiably and medically color-blind.

Yep.. Sounds like my condition.. But you're right.. It's in our nature to put other's needs before our own.. Damn us for the caring people we are, huh?

Dazed N Confused,

My whole life has been spent worrying about others...how they feel, what they want, what I can do to make things better for them. I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever thought about myself first. Unfortunately, when I did that, I felt so much guilt that I couldn't enjoy my happiness for a change.

Yet, I see others so easily able to put themselves somewhere in the very middle and are so happy and content. They give just the right amount of themselves to others and at the same time are able to have things be right for them, too. I just wish I knew where that fine line in the middle was.

...and she needs to stop it. :\

She needs to love herself just a bit, because she really is a wonderful person... maybe that's why she tends to do this.

Ah, such a vicious circle.

Hugs, Babe.

I guess I should answer the question too.
*raises his hand* Guilty.

You mean I have needs of my own??

I should think about myself. Hmmm?? That's a new concept. ;)

Many times. Not to sound selfish or anything, but I think I do it too often for my own good. Oh well.

:)

Placing someone's happiness above my own...

Oh, you can count on it. But I seem to think that happiness is like a smile...what good is it if you cannot share it? I have never regretted placing someone else's happiness above my own...even if it ended badly I get the happiness back ten fold!!!

I always place other peoples needs/desires above my own. My boyfriend is currently threatening to force me to buy a new pair of shoes....I need them, but I see things for my kids or for him, and well...what I need gets put off. I'm absolutely horrible at doing anything for myself.

Yes I have,Yes I do,and Yes I will.

Love will do that to you.

At that point, who can distinguish? Other's happiness becomes one's own, ne c'est pas?
