Have you ever pulled a story and why?

I've been thinking about pulling some stories that I have here because I feel like I have changed very much as a writer since I first submitted. Not only that but when I read them now, I see glaring bits I would like to change. I believe that some of them are in wrong 'catagories' as well. (aside from the fact that I have a personal troll.)

So, very shortly, I'm going to pull nearly all of them. Have you done this and why? Did you fix and repost them? Did you submit them for publication?

I haven't pulled any stories but like you I have thought about it because I have changed but I won't because I suppose its interesting to see developments!

I've pulled stories. Because I sold them to publishers.

I may have to pull some more soon if I ever here back from one publisher.

The only ones I've pulled are those in the Coming Together books.

I have others that should be pulled, though.

Vella,

I've pulled a few and have a request in for three more to be deleted. However, you can submit an edited version of a story and even change the category w/o pulling it.

Rumple Foreskin

Posted a few, then pulled them because I thought they really sucked. Posted again, pulled them because I thought they sucked again - repeat repeat repeat. It'll probably always be this way.
Keep meaning to work on the next tortures but can't get it going lately.

I've been editing and re-writing stories and submitting them as :EDIT:
And if I were requested to remove them in order to be published- in a hot minute!
I would not want my second-rate material hanging around in the public eye, becuase the public don't know and don't care.
If I feel the need to keep track of my development, I'll make an archive disk that stays nicely private in the shelf next to my computer- but honestly, I doubt I'd ever look at them for the fun of seeing how primitive I was back then- sometimes I cannibalise parts...

One, a chapter story that I fear i'll never finish.

I'm going to assume you mean that in a literary way and say I've been doing that as well. I have a really dreadful piece (that I thankfully never submitted here  ), and I've been pulling lines and a general feeling from it to work into a poem.

the bones are nice and crunchy- in a literary way... :p

One thing I noticed is that I had some really good plot ideas back in those days, even if I couldn't write them all that well. There are two that I am trying to develop, but that's my worst skill of all, I'd say. *heaves sigh*

How does the "EDIT" thing work? Does it just take the place of the original with submit date/comments/etc intact or does it appear as a "new" story and the old deleted?

As far as the 'personal troll,' if you feel that you need more than one, I have several I can spare.

I have pulled several stories, rewritten them and submitted them for paid publication. I have enough rejection slips to paper a large room and one published story.

I see. For those few older stories of mine that are worth salvaging, I've been adding in dialog. That's always been my weakness and I'm a glutton for punishment  .

And starrkers, I recently submitted an edit of a poem, and it retained all its info.

heh, writers, go figure. ;)

And, yes, starrkers, the edited story simply replaces the original, leaving everything else intact.

If you've re-written so much taht you think it should be considered all over again, you can post a submission with the original title and the word DELETE - add a note to the editors.

Then you can resubmit your "new" story...

I haven't pulled anything, and doubtfully ever will. I view my older stories as a testament to my growth as a writer. Any temptation to redo them is overriden by the desire to work on new stuff instead.

Just post the same title with some sort of edited notation appended. I use *EDITED*

I always detail in the moderator box that I'm only changing the text of the story and want the votes, comments, title, blah blah maintained from the original submission. I also put the Lit ID# of the original submission in the moderator box, just to be sure there's no question about which story I'm editing.

Edits don't appear in the new list. The text gets replaced, and that's all.

Cool. I may have a lash at wiping all the typos etc in a couple of mine. Wouldn't do it if they went in as new stories, but my earth day piece has a couple of annoying things in it I'd like to fix.

Like Rob, I've pulled one multi-chapter story because I sold it to a publisher.
Like Liar, I've pulled one chapter story because I started posting it before it was finished and I realized I wasn't going to finish it.
The others I've finished and posted here, I don't even think about anymore. If I sold them, I'd pull them; otherwise, I'm done with them. Although my last story, the one that's up for a year-end award, I do plan on pulling, revising and selling... someday...

I have a request in to pull a story because I've offered it for ebook publication. If it gets rejected, I'll put it back up.

No. I never have and I don't see myself ever doing it.

I don't like all of my work, but I like to see what people think of what I have done, even if it is garbage. I also like to look back and see where I was when I wrote that piece of garbage. It's fun to see how much I have changed as an author.

That's what FallingToFly did. She pulled all of hers. Some, because she has or intends to submit them for publication, and the rest for rewrites. Her first published story came out yesterday at Phaze. A Certain Way. She has started putting some back up now that they are rewritten.

I'm in the process of pulling one of mine for publication.

What he said.

I have edited older stories for typos and minor mistakes but otherwise I've left the stories as they were written.

I have amalgamated a several part story into a continuous whole and deleted the parts.

Yep, that's exactly what I did.

Since I've changed names three or four times here on Lit, I've pulled all my stuff at least twice. Probably will pull it again at some point- both Ghost and How To Marry A Rockstar are probably going to have very short lives on Lit.

Okay, back to the grindstone- I have to go get some stuff done today.
