Have you ever written something--just a sentence or a witty line or something--what you thought was incredibly good...

But in exactly the wrong place?

I just typed out my minutes from a board meeting protocol and came across a twist that made me laugh out loud. But it's such a totally stupid place to waste good humor, since nobody will read it unless there's a comminity dispute or something later on, and I don't think the brilliance of it would survive being cut out of it's context or even translated into english.

Ain't that a bitch?

Hah. I do that in half a minute.

Still too bloody late though.

they always pop up too late...I try and remeber them if they involve a good phrase turning and write them down. Hopefully they will get a chance to shine...

The proper description of your [very common] problem is the French phrase: "esprit d'escalier" [also esprit de l'escalier] Very loosely translated as "wit of the staircase." The definition is thinking of a witty remark/comeback too late [as you are slinking down the stairs]. It may also refer to such a remark.
