Have any of you been sued..for something other than divorce that is?

Yeah...

...once. I'm usually on the other end trying to collect from people who don't pay us. I was sued in the US while living here in the UK by a company that was dead wrong. A company had changed hands and apparently records about an expensive item I had rented didn't get transferred.

I learned a trick much earlier on from a lawyer who no longer practiced. He said to hire the best lawyer you could because if you're right or their case is "iffy" his/her letter will be cheaper than going through a trial with a less accomplished one. It worked. $175 and they folded up when they found out who was representing me.

If you're not in the right...give this some serious objective thought...and try to settle out of court.

I am not a lawyer...never studied to be one...don't have any reason to be giving advice.

Yea it is sad Closet Desire...but most cases are won on the bluff,...

:p

...just curious.
What was it for?
What did you do about the lawsuit, did you hire an attorney or fight it out alone?
What was the outcome?
Anyone?
Anyone?
FerrisBueller...
...anyone?

I have been sued several times, from burgleary to stalking, to vandelism.

I fought it alone each and every time.

I won each and everytime.

On a side not I have defended about a dozen friends in small claims and persoanl lawsuits and won every time. so far i have a 21-0 record and my law education consists of grade 11 Law 101, hehehe.

I am confused Todd....

But noone can defend a person in small claims...only the person sued can stand up and defend in small claims...not even an attorney can represent or defend someone in small claims.

Whats the story there?

a dozen well actually 10 not dozens and up here you can have aid in defense like a witness, i just did the majority of the talking

they called it sueing though probably prosecution was more likely the proper case but monetary reembursment is what they were tring to get out of me for something i didn't do, so I call that being sued

VERY SUSPECT MY FRIEND

My father sued me for custody of my daughter! I have a pretty good lawyer! ill let ya know how it turns out on Feb 20th!

My stepfatherinlaw, hereinafter referred to as "Daddy" was once sued for paternity. Before you conjure up images of a rich, jetsetting corporate hotshot, wipe it away and replace it with the image of tall skinny well off trailer trash. He's not trash, but basically it's where he comes from. He own multiple properties, which he rents out, and has alot of money built up in stocks (most of you would think of it as the initial investment to some mutual fund but it's a lot in his part of Missouri), and alot of cash in the bank. His brother, who is mostly broke and rather free with his sperm donation, had carnal knowledge of this chicky, along with 6 other guys, 14 years ago. Last year she decides she needs child support from Daddy. She just didn't know exactly who daddy might be. So she goes through and lists all the possible suspects and decides to list Daddy as the most probable. Even though he was in Texas at the time working and she was in Missouri. He was matched as highly probable to be the father and even though his brother was an even higher match for it, the State of Missouri decided to pursue him for Child Support because his brother already has 16 kids on his child support roll and is unemployed. Daddy was forced to prove that he was unable to have fathered the child because he wasn't even in the state at the time. Thankfully, he was able to do so via people he worked with down there and old paycheck stubs. I shudder to think what this woman would have done to my stepfatherinlaw if he hadn't been able to prove it. She has since come out and admitted that she never had sex with Daddy, but did with his brother. No, bro doesn't believe in wearing condoms and after number 17 popped up, he got himself snipped because he couldn't afford any more kids. He probably has a few more scattered around that just never tried to get child support from him. Yes, a lawyer was hired, his nearly 1500 dollar fee was much cheaper in the long run and he's pursuing a countersuit, which seems to be going nowhere last I heard.

Sometimes...

...victory is sweet. My best friend is a corporate attorney in Houston so I'll have to say that I generally like lawyers. I often find them smart and witty and, like most folks, as honest and forthright as the next person on the sidewalk (my favourite uncle was a lawyer up until the day he died). Anyway, I ran into a real crook over here. She was prominent, but unprofessional and I took offense to it. Her response was to not return calls or correspondence. In fact, she charged ME for a letter of complaint. The big beef is that she is holding some insurance papers and financial certificate to extort money from me.

Make a long story short. I filed a complaint the with government office (OSS) who ruled AGAINST her and awarded me a settlement as well waived her fees. She's still holding the documents so next week she's being SUED in the very same court that she sits on some commission.

How's that for delicious?

Yes, I'be been sued for a number of things back in the old druggy days. Never been prosecuted though.

Assualt and battery
Possesion of drugs
Vandalism
Buglary

And a few other things. But as I said. By some strange coincidence. I have never been prosecuted for those things.

I was involved in a fender bender several years ago. The other party said no damage was done to her car, none to mine, no police were called & we both left. She came back nearly a year later, filed a lawsuit against me & my insurance company. The insurance company settled, I never had to go to court. They didn't cancel my policy, but they wouldn't renew it, either. I found a better policy through a different company. The original insurance place ended up getting sued by a ton of people because of their fraudulent business practices. My fiancee's sister is a lawyer, she handled some things for us after my son was killed. I was surprised that a few lawyers called me offering to file wrongful death lawsuits against everyone from the killer's family to the church.
