Has anyone received any? Kind of a bummer. Constructive criticism is always better than "your stories suck!" Some people are really angry!

I haven't gotten any hate mail lately, but have had a few trolls and dumbasses- I always appreciate constructive comments (good or bad), but when someone says something isn't "stylish", I have to laugh my ass off *LOL*

Most of us get some negative feedback of the unconstructive variety. Once I recognize it's just someone spitting venom, I delete it and go on with my day. Giving mean-sprited replies a second thought is giving them one too many.

Some people like to jump out at you from behind bushes and flash their dicks at you. Other people like to drive down the street and yell "Fuck you!" out the window of their car. Then there are people who get of on sending you hateful feedback. They get a thrill out of it, and the more they know they've hurt you, the better they like it.

Or look at it this way: if they knew anything about writing, they'd know enough to be specific about what they didn't like. Just saying "You suck" is no more than getting the cyber finger.

And if you have any doubts about whether you really do suck, show your stuff to someone you trust and get their opinion.

I guess If your story was really bad no one would even bother. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback and I'm extremely grateful for that. I think people that don't like the stories read the positive notes and it makes them want to scream.

So you've met the trolls and mr/mrs anonymouse.....

We have a few here and they are quite annoying to say the least but it's best not to feed them... ignore and go about your business...

Mostly the trolls have their own agenda.... they hate anything in certain Catagories... why they are in there who knows, since they hate it... but they are...

Mr/Mrs Anonymouse... well they hide behind the bushes as Doc says.... they yell and rant and throw things.... Laugh and point at them but don't take them seriously... read the messages that are signed by other authors... that is the best indication that you are doing well...

No one has yet devised a troll repellent that works so we're stuck with them...

Once I actually finish and submit my story, hopefully I'll get some hate mail. Dude, I thrive on negative attention. It keeps me going and usually I can wear them down with my charm ;)

No, I haven't been the recipient of any. Which begs the question if the quality of the content is at fault. ???

I get 'em.

I get em, but the positive ones far outweigh the negative.

Same with amazon user reviews. There are 108 reader reviews of this book I wrote:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1592000673/

About 95 or 100 of the reviews say basically, "This book changed my life, it's the best book I've ever read" and around 10 or 15 say, more or less, "This book is horrible, don't waste your time or money."

(The above link is for the first edition, by the way. The second edition just came out, so far only positive reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1598631896/104-6648100-9503946
)

But the best negative user review I ever got (which amazon removed because it also contained a death threat) was for my first novel:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0970539207/

The reviewer said, among other things, "I had to give this book a one on a scale of one to five to be able to write a review, but I think even that was being generous. How about a new category? Maybe an icon of a book being used to hold up a wobbly leg of a table?"

Unfortunately, there's plenty of idiots out there.

And most of them comment anonymously.

Recently there has been a particularly bad troll hiding in the bushes for the BDSM writers. Offers no real comment about the story, just goes into an off the wall rant about how the women in the story should gave been treated.

Things like punch her teeth out and send the bitch home. Is probably the nicest of them. And no I am not kidding.

I take the option of alerting the moderators. I am assuming they have the technology to track the person similar to what they do in the chat rooms

While instant messaging with my older brother (who is gay BTW) I sent him the link to one of my stories. He barely said a word about "Eeeww, you're making me read hetero porn, yichh!" but he damn near wiped his ass with it the whole time he was reading. His main complaint; the formatting of the paragraphs. He had not a single nice word for it. He said nothing about the words I chose or how I used them. I just about told him to go fuck himself and die.

Someone once told me that having haters is the one true measure of success on the Internet. :) So I just paraphrase Sally Field: "You hate me! You really, really me!" :D

Haters

Political cartoonist Doug Marlette has said that he knows when he has produced a perfect political cartoon when he gets hate mail from both sides of the issue he was representing.

I get hate male on my F/m BDSM stories telling me I'm a stupid bitch that just hates men. On my M/f BDSM stories, I get emails saying I'm a man who hates women because a woman would never confuse sex with violence. On my lesbian story, I got mail that said my dyke ass just needed do "deep dicking" to fix me. ETC...

*shrug*

Honestly, if they took the time to write at all I must have had an impact.

Hey, I read your book. Very cool.

I had a few emails on my first stories where people I assumed I was a woman (which was funny because I don't think I've ever dated a woman who thought I understood anything about them). In my case they were mostly nice, but it was still kind of weird to have someone guessing what sex I must be to write the way I did. I took it as a compliment.

I get a lot of hate mail (or I did before my last two stories). I still get hate letters on my first two (including my first death threat just a couple of weeks ago . . . I'm so proud). Dr. M said it best, they're just trying to get to you. If you let them know that it bothers you, they'll do it constantly. The best piece of advice I ever got was to never post a comment on your own story. Once they know it bothers you, they'll hit your story endlessly. I'll sometimes delete the emails, or even occasionally answer back with a generic, "Thanks for reading my story." Must drive them crazy.

I'm new here...

....but all I've really received is positive feedback. Sure, some people may rate me low, but you will never be truly accepted by everyone all the time. If you believe in what you're writing, whoever 'they' are can go fuck themselves until they get themselves pregnant.

The truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as a perfect work and I learn more by what I did wrong than what I did right. If people keep patting you on the back all the time, you'd eventually believe that your shit actually smells like potpourri. Sometimes we need those negative assholes to keep us grounded. I mean I make grammatical errors all the time, but if someone says "Love the story' without pointing out some mistakes, then they trult haven't read the story.

MistaQ for the av option (pics by our names. ;) ) you have to post 100 posts on Lit and then log in and log out after waiting a bit and then you'll have the option available. :)

As far as hate mail...
Ohhhhh yes I get it. I don't mean the "Your work sucks... " I mean the hate mail.

I got one where I was told I should kill myself because it would make all of female kind better and they continued on ranting at me...it was the most disturbing one I'd ever gotten.

Why???? This was in response to a story I did where I chose a sperm donor sexual encounter instead of going to a lab.

==

Another was one telling me how rude my character was to insist the brother of a friend help out at the ranch... ???? He chewed me up one side and down another, ripping me a new one....

This story went on to win the 2005 Author Award for Best Romance.

This has pleased me as well. When I write with a female protagonist, everyone thinks I am female. When I write with a male one, I am male. Makes me rather proud actually. I once had an answer on my profile to the gender question, but I've removed it, because it's more fun this way. I get to be whatever they want me to be.

I've been tempted a couple time to deliberately mislead people, just for the fun of it. A hint that I might be the person in this story, or what not. So far I've refrained, since I pretty much, in fact, make everything up.
