Apparently lots of spanking, BDSM, dom/sub, so I've been told...

The Secretary

I have and it's definitely worth seeing, Fierce. There is a discussion on the movie in a thread here. I believe it's called BDSM in the movies, or something similar.

It's just called Secretary, and it's worth seeing. For a mainstream movie, it's very unjudgemental in its portrayal of BDSM relationships.

It's based on a very good short story (with a very different ending) of the same name by Mary Gaitskill, and is in a collection of her short stories called Bad Behavior. She's good; I recommend the book as well.

Here are the threads where we first talked about the film:

BDSM in the Movies

**edit** For some reason, the BDSM in the Movies thread won't link. Some kinda weird glitch or something keeps editing out the thread number. So, if you want to find it--it is thread # 11***2 if you know how to bring it up that way. Or, you can search by the thread title--BDSM in the movies.

The link below, to a second discussion that touches on the movie, works. Weird.

Movie suggestions

Be well,

I loved this movie. It was sprung upon me one sunny afternoon.

Nice surprise. ;)

It's the ONLY mainstream Movie besides exit to Eden that I've ever seen.

Speaking of which the spanking scene in that movie that ends with the sub going down on Mistress Delany is seriously awesome. Meow!

I told several people to go see Secretary.

I'd like to get it when it comes out on DVD.

Respectfully,
Helia:rose:

DRAT
We want to see this but no theaters in central Florida are showing it
Is it still just in limited distribution?
Wouldn't be surprised if they were nervous about opening it here <sigh>

i thought it was a good movie to watch but was disapointed at the way the bdsm community was represented in a stereotype that they are all menatlly distressed and need to inflict plain on themselves, just gave a bad image to bdsm from outsiders looking in.

I hope to see the movie, but my house doesn't have a dvd player, only a vcr. Is the movie only out on dvd because I can't find the video? lol

If you bring the popcorn, you can watch it here :D

i hated the movie because the couple was supposedly a Dominant and a submissive, when it was obvious they were simply a BDSM couple thru and thru, which is something very, very different. she wasn't much of a submissive, and he was laughable as a Dominant...they just put on these Dom/sub roles for erotic purposes. was just a huge disappointment to me and my Master both as we had hoped that possibly there was finally a film portraying a realistic D/s relationship. instead, it was just a peak into the lives of two "it's about the sex" BDSM'ers.

I believe bunny bondage started the biggest "secretary" thread we've had:
so i finally saw secretary

While I can respect that the movie didn't meet the expectations of osg and her Master, I think Secretary was a big step in the right direction. There were a lot of elements of my sex life in there. No, it didn't depict the whole D/s experience, but there were a lot of things that were right. (I love it when I'm told what to eat!) In particular, the scene where she wets herself rather than get up from the chair struck a chord with me.

We're not going to get R-rated movie-theater versions of our real lives anytime soon, osg - I wish we were! But I think Secretary was a good movie by itself. It was a good portrayal of that kind of relationship...there are plenty of people for whom that is realistic for them.

Plus, my girlfriend just adores James Spader! :D

The Secretary

Not only did I love the Secretary as a wonderfully thought out, funny, entertaining experience with an amazingly deft touch, I think it's brought a little bit of clarity to a deeply shadowed subject.

Like all segments of society...from children in their classes and the ones that go off the deep end and shoot anyone and everybody; to our men in blue and the *occasional*bad apples that crop up there; the BDSM culture has its own share of ugly, unfortunate individuals.

But I think The Secretary made leaps and bounds in bringing a few of the lighter truths that have been overlooked for ages into the vanilla mainstream.

I say kudos!

I picked it up from Amazon, as it wasn't very expensive and I knew I'd never get around to actually renting it. I wasn't so sure about the ending, but the bits where he was spanking her? Oh my. A friend of mine said I'd enjoy it. I don't think he realized exactly how much I would.
