In the last few days I have had a chance to really take a look at the news and to do some in depth reading about where we stand in our war on terrorism. As I did so I was once again filled with a sense of fear and dread. The latest story about the nuclear threat to New York put me over the top. What bothers me is that as I write this we could be under such a threat and we would never know it. Am I the only one who is bothered by this fact?

As I look at the world and the potential for disasters great and small I become fearful for my kids. They are 6 and 4 years old. They live in a more violent world than I grew up in. Yes, the world has always be conflicted but things seem to be intensivifying with great spead. My god, in India Muslims and Hindu's are cooking each other, the Israeli's and Palestians are murdering each other, and there are nasty little wars going on all over the globe. Many of these conflicts are ethnically or religeously driven which make the liklihood that they will continue great. It frightens me for my children and it makes me wonder what kind of world they will inherit.

The worst part of all of this is that I see no solution. None. This morning I am truely sad. For my kids.

Unfortunately this is so true. Even in Canada I am sure there are people who worry about the possibilities of such attacks. However, there is nothing you can really do about it, so worrying about it will only serve to bring stress and hardship into your life.

I believe in the saying, "Don't worry about things you cannot change" It's pointless and serves no purpose. It certainly doesn't do you any good. I completely hear where you're coming from though, as I have thought about such situations myself.

I try not to worry but...........we are so bombarded by the pace of the world that its hard not to. I will go a few days and not focus on whats going on but always it returns. I think our world(that of americans) changed beyond our knowing on Sept. 11. I wonder where we will be in 10 years. Ick. Not at all a pretty thought. And. By then I will have teenagers. That alone is a fate worse then death. lol.

greater threat

ATR--

Yes, I've noticed. I've been thinking lately, too, how we complain and bicker over insignificant crap when all around us mothers are burying their children.

Our own underclass and poor don't live like children of Palenstine. We want to cry about welfare on both sides of the fence. Imagine a world where there is no aid, no government that at the very least, can threaten the guerilla regimes.

Pretty frightening. It depresses me, too.

Peace,

daughter

I discount stories of a nuclear threat to NYC as mostly "sleaze journalism."

The threat of a nuclear bomb being smuggled into New York has existed since shorly after July 17th 1945. It's actually far less likely to succeed today than it was in the 50's and 60's during the Cold War.

We do live in a more violent and dangerous time, and ignoring that fact won't change it. However, the threats and dangers are, for the most part, things that have existed for years and decades. The difference, for the most part, is in perceptions of the dangers brought about by "instant news" and ratings for news shows.

If the Sleaze Journalists had their way, we would all be cowering in our grandparent's bomb shelters watching their version of how terribly dangerous the world has become.

If what the news reports say isn't a factual rendition of things that have happened, then take everything with a grain of salt, and just flat ignore most of it.

I hate the idea that this morning somewher in this world a child is dying a senseless and preventible death. God grant that mother peace.

Sighing deeply....

Yes around the world bad things are happening. We cannot control it completely, but only make a difference in how it affects us personally.
With the media today wanting everyone to feel the sensationalism of every detail it makes us want to stay in bed and pull the sheets over our heads.
Everyone wants to know what is going on... so all the bad things are at the very front.
There are a lot of really good things going on also. Maybe those would be a better focus for you.

If you always read or speak of death and tragedy do you smile?

Think of good things, read good stories, there are lots of them out there to be found. Promote smiling.

Lighten up Alltherage. Enjoy your children, play with them, run with them, sit on the floor and watch tv with them. Be a kid with them. You will both smile.

My kids are all over 18.. they are on their own now, dealing with the world as they have been taught/learned.

Soon grandkids will be present and it will start all over again.

Have a great day.
Stay safe,

Wing :)
