Is there anyone here who has ever attended a genuine 70s-style "Key Party"?

(NOT a swingers club, or swingers convention event, of whom there would be many on Lit).

For example, of the kind shown in the movie 'The Ice Storm", or in the TV series "Masters of Sex : S04E04 Coats or Keys?"

This sounds like a lot of fun. I had never heard of the concept. Obviously all couples should be in agreement. I think it would work best in a "vacation" environment. It would be difficult to walk in the door with someone else if there is a babysitter and/or children in the picture.

Participants might "dress up" maybe a bit more than they might if they were just going out themselves.

Been to several, we had guys place keys in a bucket that the women pulled. Had bikini bottom party where the guys pulled bikini bottoms, and a few other variations. Man I miss the early 80’s

The reason I'm posing these questions is because there are some articles going around claiming that key parties are an urban legend, because it's virtually impossible to find anyone who can give reliable information about having attended one.

For example, Katharine Frank, the author of "Plays Well In Groups" wrote last year:

Any comments from anyone who has attended, like the two replies above?

I have been to one only and the guy who organized it had only read about it. So perhaps you are cocrrect

The parties I attended were hosted by a couple in my apartment building. First invite was two weeks after I’d moved in. There were usually between 12 and 20 people, in the three years I lived there they would host 1 to 2 parties a month. Maybe 3 married couples the rest were single but we were all good friends. No drama just a bunch of horny friends that partied our asses off.

So it wasn't an urban legend, after all. Hallelujah !!

But maybe very much less common than made out to be.

Why don't you write about it? It sounds really hot !

A group of 4 guys at work and their wives used to have a Key club going.

Did it ever get awkward?

I imagine it was a little bit of a gamble. There must have been some people there you were more attracted to than others. Were you pretty obligated to go through with it with the person you drew? Anyone ever decide not to play when they got someone they didn't feel anything for?

never got awkward for me, although I enjoyed some more than others. We all lived on the beach in San Diego so most of us spent most of our days in the sun and hung out together all the time

White Rock Society

I was a young single airman at a base and heard reference to a legend called "the white rock society".

NCO's laughed about certain homes on base that had a peculiar white rockat the end of their driveways, apparently signaling that the home had participants in a swingers society on base. The society was fun until the Air Force OSI (think Navy CID) but Air Force broke it all up and a lot got in trouble for adultery through the UCMJ.

It’s been a long while since we attended a key party. I think they kind of went out of fashion, swinging just became more mainstream and killed the key party.

I spent a career in the Marine Corps, partly enlisted and finished as an officer. Especially at remote bases, the NCO wives club, would do it. I actually participated in two of them

Unfortunately the key parties were before our time. My wife would never go for me hooking up with another woman anyway. For us it would have to be a hotwife type party. Where the wives choose the keys of another man.
