Has anybody ever fallen asleep whilst driving ?

In Britain at the moment a big advertising campaign is being launched with the coming holiday seasons arriving about falling asleep at the wheel whilst driving .

I for one must admit I did once on the motorway , really frightened myself up to the point I will NOT drive now when tired .....

Ditto here on the advertising campaigns of driving while feeling tired.

Me? I have been having nightmares of falling asleep whilst driving
(since I have insomnia.) I will NOT drive if I am too tired.

Safety must be the first priority for anyone who is driving. :)
Your own safety aswell as other people's. :)

:rose: to you all. :)

Yes

In Saint Charles Parrish Louisianna.

I had a dream about falling asleep at the wheel last night.

It is always a concern here due to the vast distances that we drive. I have to drive 80 miles in order to shop somewhere other than Walmart or eat somewhere other than Mickey D's.

no I havent but have seen the aftermath of such unfortunate accidents, and it is never pretty.

Phil Collins penned a song called "Dreaming while ya sleep" which is a good tune...check it out if you can!

hi debbie

Yep at about 70

This my ex 1997 328i after an encounter with an oak tree at 70mph. I walked away with a cut on my finger.

About 20 years ago, I had a bad accident in Nashville, Tennessee, when I fell asleep at the wheel during one of those "sure, I can drive all night" road trips I used to take. Car was totaled. Girlfriend was hospitalized and required surgery to put her shattered ankle back together. I wasn't hurt very badly, but I felt so guilty about it that I married her. Two big mistakes in my life.

Then, a few years ago my brother was killed in an accident where it was suspected that he'd fallen asleep at the wheel.

I am pretty careful about staying alert when I drive now, obviously.

Hell yes. I was drunk and stoned out of my mind. Glad I didn't hurt anyone or anything.

I am much more careful now, and haven't gotten drunk in several months, but I am one of the idiots thats drives drunk when drinking. Shameful, isn't it.

Clit_licker, gosh you are lucky to be alive ...that was awful ...and Riff, I must admit I never ever drink and drive , as I have seen too many accidents involving that ...

I wonder how many people dont like to admit they have nodded off at the wheel , even if for a few seconds , like I did ....

Havent fallen asleep, but I have come close to doing it during the times my insomnia gets too bad.

i had my first experiance with this over winter break. i had fallen asleep after work while watching t.v. and my brother called me to come and get him. the next thing i remember is being about half a mile from my house with no recollection of how i got there, why i was in the car or where i was going. i guess i was barely awake and did everything on autopilot until that moment.
it was freaky.

I had an episode of insomnia in the summer before my senior year of high school, while helping a friend with her kids, and it ended up being one of those weeks where everyone needed something. I was driving to my best friend's house because she was very upset, and I dozed off, spun out, and ended up off the road. I will never drive when I'm tired enough to be at risk for that, and I will NEVER drive inattentively during the rain again.

I used to work about a half hour away from home. I know it's not much for those of you in the bigger cities, but for me, a half hour of all highway driving (not a crowded highway either) was pretty monotonous.

On more than one occasion, I caught myself being drowsy while driving home from work, but I never fell asleep.

The bad thing was, when I was in bed, I started to dream that I was actually in my car and asleep at the wheel. THOSE were some bad sleep nights, obviously.

1975, went about 1 mile before I woke up after working all night and without enough sleep, but I did wake up, had time to see I was going 60mph then had enough time to realize there was a stopped station wagon about 60 feets ahead and that there was no way of stopping or getting around it. My car was a solidly built 1967 Cutlass SS and the other was a 1968 Ford LTD wagon that the back end folded up like a tuna can on impact thank goodness thus letting us all walk away.
Did I learn from that and never drive tired again? Try as I might I still nod off at times. Recently coming back from home I traveled on a major interstate for no less than 20 miles that I had and still have no memory of doing so. I'll probably die in a crash from falling asleep I just hope I don't kill or hurt anyone else.

Yes, I have... luckily, it's always been for just a few seconds, and I've not been in an accident because of it. *knocks on wood*

The stinker of it is that I NEVER get behind the wheel if I'm tired or under the influence of any kind of substance (even just cold meds); I just start to nod off if I'm driving for more than a couple hours. I've tried everything - frequent breaks, caffeine, loud music, no music, windows open on a cold day - nothing works, I still doze off.

I have fallen asleep a couple of times after working 25 hours or so straight at work. Only once did I actually end up off the road, just down an enbankment a little way. We are lucky here in Ct , that most of our main highways have the "bumpy" pavement at the sides of the road that make a ton of noise when you drive over them. These normally will wake you right up. Unfortunately , I have had a couple of coworkers drive off the road asleep, one flipped his truck on its roof and did some serious damage to him too.

my uncle calls those the "wake up, stupid"s

Wish we had the "wake up stupids " over here on all our roads, we do have the "rumble strips" on our motorways ....

Nope, I haven't fallen asleep at the wheel yet and hope I never do. A couple of times I've been real tired after work, but I just turn on some of my hard music pretty damn loud and that forces me to stay awake and alert. Works so far.

I've never fallen asleep behind the wheel, but I've been close sometimes. I try to be extra careful now.

Clit licker, you are one lucky guy. Only a cut; that could have easily been worse. I think Riff needs to see the picture a few more times so that he can quit drinking and driving and keep us innocent drivers safe.

And it was a beamer too. By the way, Lovetoread, love the ornament on your car!

Still well said

I'm glad I was able to see your remarks before the edit, and I admire what you did, but also agree with your viewpoint.
