I think we have, but I would love to hear your opinion. I feel that we have let politics divide us. I don't pretend to understand why but the right has given all power to the rich to use for their selfish needs.
Why do we feel that we can't handle having state paid health coverage? Every other wealthy nation and many poor nations can manage it but for some reason a large part of our voting population feel it is a sin against everything we stand for.
Why is it alright for fifty percent my tax dollars to support torture and war when I don't personally support either one, but a holy roller will cry foul if a few pennies of these dollars support birth control? They talk about how evil it is for an american woman to expect birth control from her health provider like it is an affront to God. If we as a nation can't reach a compromise on something as simple as that, what chance do we have on solving the more complex problems that face us?
There have been several threads where we try to figure out what is going on racially in our country. It nearly always turns into a shouting match between people who seem to hate one another. We as a nation have let ourselves become a group of different tribes rather than one people. I think this is the single biggest threat to America, and that this division of the american people make america a threat to the rest of the world.
I feel sure that I will see the usual suspects post here how I should smoke another one or some such shit but I am hoping to hear from some of the saner voices here.
We are at a crossroads for our country. This is not the time to try to cut down the government, rather a time when you need the government more than ever before.
We need to deal with how we feed our people when there are going to be fewer and fewer jobs. We need government to protect the people from the rich when they don't need us anymore to work their plants, armies and fields. What are workers supposed to do when there is no work and no safety nets?
As a nation we need to have this conversation but I only hear shouting and accusations. At the time we need reason the most, we get hatred and division instead.
