Meleagris gallopavo. The damn thing actually IS named after the country (in a roundabout way). The etymology is pretty interesting. The wild version is found only in North America and the invading Europeans mistook it for a European guinea fowl, the Turkey Cock.

It wasn't all that long ago (thirty-odd years) that the wild version was extremely scarce— that's no longer the case. Bagging a wild turkey was no mean feat for a hunter back then. They are good flyers, fast as hell and difficult to stalk. Nowadays, with their return to relative plenty, turkey hunters are more frequently rewarded.
